Weird crashing that just gets worse and worse

Hey everyone. I got a new computer recently and thought I'd revisit Oblivion with a comp that could handle it. This is my third reinstall after experiencing severe crashing my first two attempts at modding it up. This time I carefully installed a suite of mods including FCOM, Unique Landscapes, Qarl's TP, and the unofficial patches. I followed detailed guides for the install of all of these and I'm pretty sure I did it right.

 

The game would run great but I kept running into crashes in certain areas. Outside of anvil the game crashed constantly in the exact same place. I tried lowering video settings, but no dice, so I uninstalled Unique Landscapes. I rebooted the game, but then none of my savegames would load. The loading bar would get to about 20% then BOOM CTD. Every. Time.

 

"Ok, cool, I get it. You want you're Unique Landscapes back?"

 

I re-installed UL but things got worse... the game won't start at all. I mean, I tried loading from OBSE, oblivion.exe, and the launcher, and it's always the same. The screen flickers for a second, then nothing.

I took away UL again, but the same thing is happening. I read on another topic that selecting "Disable Desktop Composition" in compatibility settings can fix this. Oddly, it fixed it a couple boots, but the save games still wouldn't load. Then I uninstalled another mod and now the game won't start up again, regardless of the Desktop Composition setting.

 

Also, according to BOSS, Wrye Bash, and OMM my mods are good.

 

So... help please?

 

(Please don't say re-install. With mods, that takes for freakin ever, and I can't go through all of that again just to have more crashing)

Aha! So I reinstalled UL, restarted my computer, selected "Disable Desktop Composition" and now the game starts again. YEAH

 

But loading save games still doesn't work at all. It loads about 10% of the way, stops then CTD. I tried loading earlier saves, like ones indoors, to no avail.

Ok well nobody is really helping me, but I think I've found the problem. I unchecked all of the .esm and .esp files in obmm and started adding mods and testing the game one by one. I added all of the FCOM patches at the same time and the savegame problem happened again.

If your save depends on ESM's that aren't there.... 50/50 chance it will crash on loading. Bash has the ability to remove masters from your save..... not sure if that will enable them to load successfully though. Use bash to see what mods your save wants, make sure those are loaded.......

 

Natural_Weather_HDR_by_Max_Tael.esp is know to potentially cause some issues..... Using all natural weather instead is a good idea.

Natural_Weather_HDR_by_Max_Tael.esp is know to potentially cause some issues..... Using all natural weather instead is a good idea.

 

Just tried loading masters in bash, which turned my saves nice and purple, but the result was the same: Load to 15% and crash.

 

Natural Weather is disabled, so I don't think it's that. The problem only happens when I have the FCOM suite of mods enabled, with the second load order I posted up.

I had a similar problem that would crash on loading, and when it did eventaully load, fast travel was impossible.

Running the game with no mods installed still had the same outcome, so I had a look at obse plugins and removed them one by one. The problem turned out to be oblivion stutter remover, which was corrupted. Replacing it from my stock with the same version solved the problems. I still get the occasional crash around anvil like you do. There is one particular cell there that will always cause problems if it is modified in anyway. Also the waterfront is impossible to visit, but I do have over 220 mods running so it is not suprising. Of course when upgrading rigs and expecting modded oblivion to simply roll over and behave is pie in the sky as we all expect to mod the game with massively texture rich graphic improvements that all have to load in an instant when you fast travel or indeed load a game. The bigger your texture mods then the bigger your chance of one not loading properly and triggering a ctd I am afraid.

 

Do you use fraps? I have a 550 card as well and it does not like the fraps codec. It ran perfctly well on my old ati card but cell changes will cause ctds if fraps is running. I have proved this beyond doubt by continually enabling and disabling fraps.

I tried reinstalling OSR, but same result. I don't have fraps running, so that's not it.

 

I am, however, using Qarl's texture pack. The thing is, the game worked fine with Qarl's installed but no mods running, but had an issue when I turned on the FCOM mods. Maybe the FCOM conflicts with qarl's, or something.
