Vault 76 NEW thoughts

It can be played single player in the same sense that GTA Online can be. s#*!, all I could think watching the trailer is how similar they are, down to the ICBM strikes in Fallout 76 that seem eerily similar to the orbital strikes in GTA Online.

If you're still holding out hope for modding, you're in denial. He said everything is server side and the game is always online. This is basically an MMO.

Given this will be an online-only experience, I was thinking about what some of the implications of that are. Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this suggest the following ?:

1) no vats (how would the game pause ?)

2) no npc dialogue (or--what, while I'm getting a quest from an npc--are there even nps ?--someone snipes me from a mountain ?)

3) even MORE non-stop 'shooty' than fallout 4.

4) stats / achievements progress, but the single player's effect on the world doesn't persist--so in a sense, the single player narrative is very very limited.

5) no nexus mods--I mean, how can I have gun mod x in a massive map with a dozen other rando players [except potentially via CC = $] ?

6) single player will be technically possible, but playing aside a dozen [dozens ?] players online means those in teams will dominate.

7) no changing the difficultly level to suit your own style / pace of play. difficulty will be determined by whoever is on your server and however big their squad is.

1) No VATS.

2) It will be like Elder Scrolls Online, most likely.

3) Yup.

4) There isn't any "single player" narrative to speak of - the best we can get is "solo" play.

5) Definitely no Nexus mods.

6) Solo play will be possible and instances / servers will only have 12 or so players on them at any given time.

7) Pretty much, yes.

I didn't understand the missile strike part. Does that mean, to the extent you want to build settlements, it becomes a settlement babysitting game?

Truly baffled by what I just watched. Why on earth did Bethesda run that "Save Player 1" ad campaign back in December if they knew online only would alienate their core fan base?

So, I originated the thread with hope and some guesses. I was wrong about the name (beer). I just watched Tod Howard's reveal at E3 and I was wrong about it being a MMOG. It's actually a MOG. Drop the "Massively." Just watching the reveal vids it seems to me it's just another online shooter with Fallout-style tweaks introduced.

I've got lots of questions about how it all works and the dynamics of it and such. I even have lots of comments and ideas about what I saw. But I really don't care. That game is not for me.

That's actually OK. My premise was that maybe "Fallout 76" was outside of the core "Fallout" franchise. We don't know for sure, but I can still hope for an FO5 that I would want to play.

Just watched the presentation.

It's mainly a new earnings model with existing assets which explains a pretty short development time. If you just watch the available game play footage it could have been a FO4 expansion. (edit: saw some more footage and it seems there's plenty of new weapons, enemies and landscape features but it still looks familiar). Multiplayer could be exciting but obviously bad news for the open modding community not under their control. Mods might be in but most likely Creation Club only, allowing them to plant assets on all clients to display them properly.

I do hate instancing so I'm curious about their take on it. i.e. how persistent the gameworld will be and feel like. And of course what pvp mechanics are in place. Questions, questions ... it could shape up to be the next big mmo disaster as well as a success, depending on a lot of factors and game mechanics. I'm pretty skeptical about those. Will definitely -not- be preordering. Better to sit back and wait a bit for post release feedback on this one.

They seem to be hoping the over the top gore will set it apart from the other games 76 is trying to copy. That might make it popular among the mindless twitch players. Probably enough to make it successful since much of the content is a rehash from Fallout 4 I bet the cost of development was less than half of what Fallout 4 was.

This E3 should have told you just what Bleh-thesda thinks about the modding community. They didn't mention mod support at all.
