How to make and apply a texture set to mineable ore veins

Recommended Posts

Edit: Problem solved! If you want a laugh, read my post and then see what I got wrong.

Hi.

With the help of OldMansBeard, I managed to make re-coloured armour, ore and ingots. It was just done by making new texture sets and applying them to duplicated items, using the vanilla nif files. These all look fine and behave properly in game.

I wanted to do the same for mineable ore veins but came totally unstuck. The appearance of the new veins is a bit off but although I get the 'mine mithril ore' prompt to come up on screen, the mining animation cuts out almost as soon as it starts. I tried several veins in game and they all behaved the same.

I'm pretty sure its to do with me fiddling with the textures because if I duplicate silver ore veins and edit everything as before but don't touch the textures it all works fine and I can mine my mithril from them.

I also tried duplicating the nifs and allocating my new colour texture using nifscope. This time the veins look as they should but they still can't be mined.

Does anyone know what I'm missing?

Edit: The solution (doh!)... When I put my original mithril ore veins in I used the cidhna mine floor mining furniture instead of the normal one. I then duplicated it for each of my new ore veins. When I tested using veins with no texture modifications, I used the correct floor markers. Result? none of the veins with texture mods could possibly work, whereas all the others did, leading me to the completely wrong conclusion. At least I've learned how to alter textures in nifscope. Gods, I spent hours looking at every aspect of the set-up except the stupid floor markers... you've got to laugh.

erm.. why are you doing this with texture overlays rather than new meshes with the textures naturally on them? Overlays like that can be unreliable (particularly on armor), and outside of architecture/clutter there isn't any reason to use them. It would take about three seconds longer to do it properly.
