Count your blessing that it was an "immersive" glitch, massive dragon onslaught. Because CTD is so not immersive.

Keep in mind, this is not exactly a persistent world. I don't think dragons would attack, or even spawn all over the map as if Skyrim is a living and breathing world with or without us around. This is not an MMORPG :) The only thing I know happens in the background are things like Immersive Patrol and some civil war mods. These NPCs would patrol the entire map (wherever the mod creator wants them). And if they are to fight each other, they would fight each other to death, outside Whiterun for example, when you can be sitting in Riften sipping tea with the Yarl. Wait, I can be wrong. I know an NPC can travel from 1 place to another, but if we are not in range, Skyrim would not render them. Would NPCs fight each other even they are not being rendered (and invoking animations)? I know somehow in FO4 they did make it so that things happen in the background. Caravan NPCS sometimes get locked into battles and take forever to arrive. They are essential and do not die, but with weak weapons, sometimes against some very strong foes, it would take days for them to kill. Someone did mention in FO4 to make certain NPC essential and to give them better weapons so they can finish their task, completely out of player's view.

But whatever, make use of your godly power called "the console" and resurrect any dead NPCs, problem solved.
