jet4571
Skyrim is 100% steam required to install and always was. that was one of the complaints about the game when it was first released, the older games like Oblivion did not have steam as a requirement. when it was first released you did not have to have Steam running if you launched from the exe directly but that was changed with the second patch, maybe thats what you were thinking of. If anyone says non steam version they mean pirated. I actually find this thread to be funny now. I reported the OP and now there's a big discussion on the nexus policy towards pirates. If someone is stupid enough to admit pirating it then they deserve to be banned and are lucky that nexus isn't sending an email to Bethesda with logs and lists of pirates. Stupid people steal something and then tell complete random strangers that they did, and thats my opinion of everyone that admits to stealing the game. gasti89
Well, i think it's that. In fact i remember it was the time of "4gb Skyrim mod", so 1st release or 1st patch. I must have missed some update news (damn auto-updates, lol). Thank you for the explanation!
LadyMilla
I believe not. I bought Skyrim as retail disk, and it still installed through Steam Wrong. It takes about 30 seconds to look up the relevant help topic on Steam Support. How to install from Disc instead of Steam So it is possible to avoid the lengthy download process. That said, Steam is still required for activation, but once the game is activated, you can switch the Steam Client to offline mode (you can even block it with your firewall). But you cannot run a legal copy without running Steam. However, you can run it without allowing Steam to access the Internet.
myrmaad
And that, ladies and gentlemen, is why we ask for more information.

You are correct, it is not required to download the game, I never said that. All I did say is that it is installed through Steam (as the installer is not the normal install window that we all know from Windows, but it is Steam that does all the work)
jet4571
I must have missed some update news (damn auto-updates, lol). Actually everyone missed the update news for the patch that made the exe require steam to be running because they didn't tell anyone about it and the whole patch was to make it require steam. Really it was bad pr to just patch it like that rather than include that fix in another patch with other fixes.
