CTD near Falkreath caused by SSEEdit cleaned files

I started experiencing persistent CTD's when roaming the forest area around Falkreath.

At first I thought it would be a mod conflict because I do have a lot of mods installed, but after tedious testing I eventually decided to verify my game cache through steam. Verifying caused my SSEEdited files to revert back to their vanilla state... and now I no longer experience any crashes around Falkreath.

The only .esp files I cleaned with SSEEdit were suggested to me by LOOT: Update.esm, Dawnguard.esm, HearthFires.esm, Dragonborn.esm.

Does anyone know if this is a common or known issue? Maybe I shouldn't be cleaning one of these .esp files? Either way, I would appreciate any information anyone might have about this. Thanks.

I doubt if cleaning those files was the cause of your crashing. One of the reasons that there is a verify files option on Steam is that your master files can become corrupt and this is one way of fixing that. One way to check is to start a new game with your master files cleaned and no mods, except maybe the Unofficial patch, and go to the area that you were crashing at. If you still crash then that is the problem, if not then you know it was not cleaning your master files but another source of your crashing.

While master files rarely become corrupt they sometimes do, so if verifying your master files fixed your problem that is more likely the problem than cleaning those files.

I understand where you are coming from, and also acknowledge that its possible my master files became corrupted in some way, but the only difference in my client between crashing vs not crashing was verifying steam (& therefore resetting cleaned files). Maybe steam also reset other files I do not know about that were the actual cause, but the only files I saw altered were the ones I specifically cleaned.

No other mods were installed (or uninstalled) and I didn't change any game preferences or settings.

The biggest reason I don't believe mods were involved is because I'd been to the crash area before and after with the exact same unchanged mod order.

I've had a similar experience. But then I also see SE crash for many things in mods that LE would just let slide by. I just don't clean the masters anymore in SE, and no crashes. I do clean all my mods though. About half of what I download have basic issues - errors, don't forward Update.esm fixes, ITMs, water flow issues, etc. etc.
