Uttering Hills Cave conundrum

I'm raising the white flag on this one. I've got to the end of the corridor having massacred all the bandits and I'm faced with the 3 chain puzzle. Spent ages on it to no avail. Checked out the walkthroughs on YouTube and NOBODY has bothered to complete the quest. In fact, in the comments section of one video someone said he was at that point but was stuck and continued to ask if there was any way to continue in that dungeon? The video poster replied "No, that's the end of the quest." which clearly isn't true!

Even the Skyrim Wiki doesn't mention this puzzle. Very frustrating!

Can anyone throw some light on how to deal with those 3 chains please?

Which quest are you doing?

If this is the cave I'm thinking of, there was no puzzle at the end, just cells whose doors open by pulling the chains.

I've been to that cave at least twice on different radiant quests, in one quest there was a skeleton in one of the cells, but no puzzle to get to it.

The quest was given to me by Annekke Crag-Jumper. I had to locate and kill the bandit leader at Uttering Hills Cave. What you have described is correct only I never had anything in any of the 3 cells. If they serve no purpose then I'm amazed they were programmed into the game, especially as they have 3 chains side by side for their operation. Usually in Skyrim that's a classic scenario for a puzzle however; I have already killed the bandit leader so I suppose you must be right, that really is the end of the quest.

I have not gotten that particular quest, but did go there for an amulet just recently, and did recall being there before for something else as well. I also thought there was more to the place than what there seemed to be, but nothing I could find. Given the radiant quest system, one wonders if given the right quest does something change in the cave so the chains and doors are some type of puzzle, but on other quests there is no puzzle?

Some quests require you to free a prisoner from a radiant location that has prison facilities. Uttering Hills is one such location. It is also one of the locations where you may be sent during the last part of "Arniel's Endeavor" to locate a courier.
