Fallout 3 Reinstallation Trouble

Hello,

Recently, my Fallout 3 became really unstable, so I decided it was time for a fresh install. I deleted the game and reinstalled it. Now I can't get it to launch, which is a problem I have every time I do this. But I can't remember how I got it working last time and I have followed all the steps in the steam guide: https://steamcommunity.com/app/22370/discussions/0/846940248950664435/

I need some help. If anyone could give me some tips or anything I would sincerely appreciate it.

Here's the list of relevant info:

Windows 8.1

Steam version of Fallout 3

I have an Acer laptop with integrated graphics

(I think thats all thats important but if you need to know anything else, let me know)

main issue:

It seems like the game crashes whenever my mouse loads in. Like, I can start the launcher, click play, and the startup screen will get rolling, y'know, with the slides showing the Bethesda info and such. And it'll play the first few seconds of this sweet slide action and whenever my mouse pops up on the screen, it crashes.

I haven't been able to find anything about this, but its possible I haven't looked hard enough. Anybody with any information that might help me solve this issue will have my first born son named after them and I'll love you forever.

Thanks for reading all that, and thanks in advance to anyone who can help.

I'll direct you toward this portion of this article (written for FNV but completely valid for FO3) The entire article is worth reading.

https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/FNV_General_Mod_Use_Advice#Do_NOT_accept_the_default_install_location

It might or might not solve your problem specifically but it is a needed step for old games on newer OS and for starting troubleshooting further.

Fallout 3 was designed to be played on a desktop with a graphics card, not an integrated graphics chip.

You could try using the Intel Integrated Bypass Package https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout3/mods/17209

Isn't that what the d3d9.dll is for? I read that its purpose is to get the game to work with my graphics chip, and it usually works. This is an anomally. I usually edit fallout.ini, paste d3d9.dll in the game folder, make sure the launcher and exe are running in compatibility mode XP sp3, install FOSE and then it works, I think. I'm having trouble remembering because its been years since I had to do this, but I think that's all I ever had to do.

If I get this game working, I'm gonna write a step by step personal guide just in case lol

I never knew that was an issue. huh. Well, I would try to move it, but I have gigs upon gigs of games, it would probably take a few hours just to paste the SteamApps folder to my desktop as a backup, to say nothing of how long the rest of the process could take. But I guess at the end of the day its about how dedicated you are.

I really need to learn to backup my fallout game folder before I go messing with it. Its possible that I may just have followed my usual guides wrong or installed FOSE too soon. I might check and see if I have a backup folder from an earlier, functional install laying around in some forgotten mods folder or a recycling bin or something. Would pasting that in and replacing the current entire folder work?

Every time I do this stuff, I just imagine my game is held together with gum and hope lmao

I've never met the issue myself (Modding compy was still under XP before it died a few days ago and games were installed on a different drive) but I've read countless posts of people under newer OS reporting different kind of issues and solved by moving the game folder out of program folder. It's quite well documented now.

Without personal experience, I can't answer that, but all the details and explanations are given in the following links

https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/Installing_Games_on_Windows_Vista%2B

I understand it can be an heavy move but at the end you should have a more enjoyable modding and playing experience.

Good luck!
