The top brass went back to elect a new Kahn. The armies stayed put. Obviously didn't invade though without leadership. Even if they had invaded they had never been tested in Western terrain (You can ask Napoleon how important your surroundings are to war). If they did manage to drag themselves through the Holy Roman Empire, through a France that was probably as powerful as any time in there history to present. It was slain in front of its mother so that it would never forget where its child was and the Mongolians used this as a way to find the burial site because no one was allowed to know where it was!
