FMod
File exchange sites often introduce intentional delays, intentionally slow down the speeds for non-subscribers, delete the files after a while, and rarely agree to carry large files. Regular http or ftp doesn't always support resuming, doesn't guarantee file integrity, doesn't have integral file management functions. Well seeded torrents will max out any connection and guarantee file integrity on arrival. A lot of game mods and a lot of free software (inc. Linux distros) and noncommercial media is distributed via bittorrent. Not that it matters to a lot of users. But bittorrent was never developed for piracy, only got adopted by some, and even then piracy thrives as much or more through file sharing websites and usenet than it does through bittorrent.
