abacaxi
Ok I got an issue with what I suspect is an intended ambient sound effect. The correspondence with Bethesda sofar suggests they think its some kind of hardware or software issue (which I don't think is the case). Because getting aware of the sound ruined playing Skyrim for me, I'm going to take the precausion of putting the description of it in spoiler tags. I suggest you be carefull with actually reading the spoiler it if you still enjoy Skyrim and suspect you may be annoyed by an ambient sound issue at all. The issue is a series of two high tone "squeaks". The sound which I assume is an intended ambient sound effect, is always present when playing the game, indoors or outdoors, loops with a length of about 2 seconds, and is around the 8khz frequency I'd say. It is not present when looking at the map. It sounds a bit like a grasshopper or more precisely like a photocopier. It goes from the left to the right channel. Can anyone else hear this? lnsentience
You don't need to bother spoiler tagging it. Users would want to know if they're having this problem. I'll ask the obvious questions: 1- Use different speakers/headphones. Still hear it?2- Do you only hear it during the game?3- Did you install any mods (even non-sound mods as they could screw up something)?
abacaxi
Well they can always click to see the spoiler and I really wouldnt want to ruin stuff for others. 1 Different sets of sets of headphones and earplugs, yes, present in all. I dont own speakers.2 Yes, hahaha only during the game. I really wouldnt be emailing Bethesda about solving my tinnitus :).3 No mods. I heard it on seperate fresh installations of Skyrim as well (validated the correct installations per Bethesdas instructions too). Whats more, on two different soundcards in XP, one of the soundcards I took along to my Windows 7 installation, sound still present. Georgiegril
So I think Insentience was referring to hearing the sound while using other applications--games, youtube, whatever.Have you checked to make sure your sound cards are updated? Even if it just seems to be a skyrim thing? Tried reinstalling the sound card drivers? (it's a stretch, but...)Also, when you did the reinstallation, did you manually remove any leftover files on your hard drive, as well as use the "delete local files" on steam? Was there a time that you could play the game without the noise? If so, can you think of anything that changed before the problem began?
abacaxi
Good point about what he meant, I was just sortof joking though. No, only in Skyrim (and it stops when opening up the map), not with any other kind of computer activity. Yes, my soundcard drivers are always updated, and have been reinstalled several times since I became aware of the issue for as i said, multiple soundcards. After moving to Windows 7, I just downloaded Skyrim all over at least one time and think that was an entirely clean steam folder. (I guess I can redo that and make sure the installation is entirely clean for sure.) I'm not sure, but you know how it is (maybe) that music and ambient sound start to grate after a while of playing the game. It may have been there but I could stand it: for a while. Butteh, I'd most of all like to know if anyone else hears it as, again, it sounds like an entirely intended but (at least for me) unbearably grating ambient sound. edit: moved a line to the proper place Edited May 21, 2012 by abacaxi
Georgiegril
I have not heard it. I have had a brief situation where I got a sound loop that seemed to be related to the fireball spell fx getting stuck, and I have heard of others having similar issues, but nothing so pervasive as yours. I got curious and did a web search, where I ran across this possible solution: external link Don't know if it will help, but it sounds like it can't get much worse! abacaxi
No thats really not it, its a distinct looping sound, not static. I guess I should make a recording. Not now though as Skyrim is re-re-reinstalling, this time after nuking both the folders in documents and the steamfolder as well. abacaxi
Ok, thats helped  its probably nuking (by this I mean deleting, dont actually nuke anything without parental control kids) the old remaining Skyrim folder and or folder in mydocuments that did the trick. Thanks Georgiegril! Edited May 21, 2012 by abacaxi
