Why can't I do anything about the Silver-Bloods and Black-briars?

-Having only one way to beat a quest is not railroading.

-Having your journal fill up with quests is not railroading.

-Having to do certain quests to get certain items is not railroading.

You dont seem to know what railroading is.

I disagree....Being forced to join a faction to complete the Main Quest is railroading....aka. The Mages School....having a Dovahkin who can barely light a candle with the magic he possesses and NEVER uses, yet town Guards the length and breadth of Skyrim making comments about him being a Mage is not only ridiculous, but also irritating and a kick in the gut for immersion and RP'ing.....I feel I have a much greater opportunity to RP in ME and that's a linear driven game....I expected more for RP opportunity from Skyrim given the sand box style.

...As for the Silver Bloods and Maven, yep, I searched high and low for ways to 'pick a fight' with them....'cross Maven' as such....ended up buying the 'Official Guide', there is no way to deal with them...a real let down given the carrots Bethesda dangled in front of us in regards to these families.

Funny because I never joined the Mages College to complete the Main Quest, I told the Gate guard i needed to get in, she asked me to do a test, I used by Thu'um to prove I am a Dragon-born, set let me in, I got the information I needed, and then I left.

Never did any quest for the Mages.

Neither do I....but if you check your entries you are now a part of their Guild and Guards will begin to mention you being a Mage....Though I have recently found a way to circumvent the Mages Guild entirely....Went straight to the Daedric quest 'Discerning the Transmundane' instead....though it's a b*tch to find without the Guide Book and the circumventing may well have glitched my game, I am not sure if its responsible, but now Odahviing won't land at Dragons reach....avoiding the Mages has been the only change I have made and it's the first time Odahviing won't land for me.

Nope, it's simply evidence of derailment off the railroads tracks that Bethesda apparently intended you to be on ...

BTT: I always now as rule of play, go to the Black Briar Mercenary Lodge (or whatever it's called) and butcher the whole bunch! It never gets mentioned and no-one seems to care, but damn me it's fun and gives a certain amount of satisfaction as well

Nope, its simple evidence of... well nothing.

Getting admitted into The College doesn't make you a real member, an honorary one sure, just as Sinderion was, but until you actually do College things your not "in" the college.

The Guards saying "your that mage from the college" is just acknowledging you honorary membership.

Railroading = having Stone(s) of Barenziah and the only way you can get rid of it (them) is to join the Thieves Guild, and having no knowledge whatsoever that EITHER are inevitable until you pick it up the first stone.

Except that isn't railroading because you aren't forced to do it, try again.

furthermore you dont HAVE to join the thieves guild for any reason.

Honorary? Honorary would imply you DIDN'T have to pass a test to gain entrance to the College in the first place..

If you are a member of the College it's because you either want to be there or have to be there (i.e. just to gain access to one said dungeon to finish an otherwise totally unrelated quest) - not as some simple "guest".
