Comrade365
(I posted this thread on fallout 4 general discussion before, but I think it's more suitable in this context, so I moved it.)Hello everyone! I'm looking for advice on a temperature problem I have while playing Fallout 4. I have a heavily modded game (no ENB's and graphics mods though, mostly added settlements, a few weapons and clothes). I have a gaming laptop (i7 6700HQ, Nvidia GTX965) which can run Fallout 4 on ultra settings (just has minor problems with shadows due to a native glitch in the graphics card - I use the ConfigTool to turn off the shadows, volumetric lighting and godrays. My graphics card usually is 60-80 C during play, even in "heavy" areas such as far harbor and diamond city. The CPU however , didn't seem to be a problem, it was always 70-80C, however recently it started going up to 90+C, to the point that it goes to 90+ every time I play. The computer didn't shut down or anything during play, which means it hasn't hit the critical temperature mark yet. Note: Before this all happened, I had my motherboard changed at an official OEM PC service under warranty due to humidity seeping in - which caused the circuits to fry. I guess it has new thermal paste and CPU/GPU units. It's well maintained, dusted and in an air conditioned room, which bothers me even more! jones177
Hi A modded Fallout 4 is the hottest game I know of. It gets hotter as the save gets older & you add more content by building up settlements & adding mods. In 2016 I upgraded one of my computers with a i7 6700k. Since I wasn't planning to overclock it I used a Intel tower cooler. After about a month my computer throttled running the game.Throttling caused low frame rate and stutter. I found that my temps running the game were in the high 90s. Temps in my modded Skyrim were in the low 80s. I upgraded to a Noctua NH-D15 CPU cooler & temps have been fine ever since. You might want to try a laptop cooling pad to play the game.
Rabbit1251
When was the last time you cleaned your machine? Dust can accumulate in the casing and it acts like putting a heavy overcoat on the components. This can be especially harmful in hot weather. Disconnect the machine and take it out to the driveway (you don't want to do this in the house). Run a vacuum through it and fire some cans of compressed air through it (especially the CPU and memory boards). Your computer will thank you. Comrade365
Thanks for the help people! Yes I got a lot of settlements and modded ones and a very old save (20 days + some hours).Yes I often clean the machine with high power vacuum cleaners (not compressed air though).I don't use a cooling pad, but I might get one for the sake of cooler temperatures. Since I'm an IT technician, I have a slight feeling that whoever was servicing my laptop might have messed up something with the thermal paste as my temps tend to get in the 80s (Max value) while playing 2D games.I would've done it myself but then I'd break the warranty :(I wanted to know whether or not Fallout 4 can cause this high temperatures on a configuration like mine. It didn't seem very plausible but - who knows what bethesda can bring us :)Idle temps vary between 40C-50C. Voltages seem fine. Looking forward to hear your opinions! jones177
Try testing your laptop with Prime95. If you throttle or blue screen without an overclock report it. The i7 6700HQ has a BGA socket(soldered onto the board) so if there is an issue it would be with the boards manufacture. My i7 8086k with a 5ghz overclock on all cores runs cooler than your laptop. It idles at 34c with 1.344v. With that setup my level 30ish games have temps in the 70s. My level 70 plus saves have temps in the 80s. The only issue the vanilla game has is with textures. I did 3 playthroughs before modding it(with the exception of CBBE). No CTDs. No heat issues. I tested with a i7 2600k with a stock cooler. This setup would throttle on my heavily modded Skyrim if it had any dusts on it. After modding this game I had to have the case open with a floor fan blowing on it. blitzen
You might want to get some software that dynamically reports the CPU fan speed and see if it's operating correctly and if it's hitting max rpm. I would get a cooling pad regardless. Laptops aren't well ventilated.
