You need to fix you load order (the order of which your mods are structured. You can fix this the efficient way or the easy way. Basically you need to make sure Skyrim is on top of everything with Update.esm right under it and all other .esm under that. And then all esp mods should be under that. The way your game crashes I'm guessing your skyrim.esm or update.esm isn't in the right order Easy Way:Rename all the .esm and .esp by putting a z in front of them so they move down the list. The Right Way:Get the Nexus Mod Manager (it works great for skyrim, I wouldn't recommend using it for multiple games anytime soon though but it's up to you)With the Mod manager you can adjust the load order by dragging and dropping on the list of esm and esp's you have. I was hesitant to switch to using a mod manager at first too, but it makes things 300% easier. Download 95% of mods with the click of a button, able to completely uninstall them without going into a ton of folders etc If your problem isn't load order, post some more info and it'll be figured out. If an .esp file is depending on an .esm or the .esp comes with a .bsa file, it will break the mod by renaming it. Don't do it. Use a mod manager instead to set up your load order. Nexus Mod Manager is not the only one, there is also Wrye Bash, Mod Organizer and a few others. You can find them here on the nexus.
steve40
I'm pretty sure that the bsa files load independently of any esp file. An esp might break if it can't find the assets that it needs in a bsa file, but only if there is no other version of those assets elsewhere. Either way, renaming either file in these situations should not be an issue. The bsa file does not have to have the same name as the esp. You can preload bsa files via the Skyrim.ini file. if you rename a bsa file that's listed in the ini file then you should remember to update the ini file also. I'm fairly sure that master (esm) files will load before esp files regardless of their name. HOWEVER, it is quite conceivable that renaming a MASTER file could break any esp files that dependent on it, so I would advise against renaming any master file as a precaution. Virtually all mods depend on skyrim.esm but I haven't had any issues with the many mods (esp's) that I've renamed. Afaik, the main issue that you have to be careful of is if a mod uses custom voice recordings then you need to preserve the mod's file name or it will break. But that is an untested rumor as far as I am concerned. Anyhow, to solve the crashing problem, load up a small number of mods at a time and try to pinpoint which specific mod is causing the crash. Once you've identified it, try loading it either first (after all master files of course) or last in your load order. If neither option solves the problem then ditch that mod.
