"Crash" save?

Yeah but the system save is different, as far as I'm aware it only happens at that point. It's worth installing this https://www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/45652 saves can go wrong once in a while and this ensures you'll always have others to go back to, if the saves are being made to an SSD you won't even notice them being made and as such can set them to 50 saves at three minute intervals.

I would also avoid using PCB from the console or any mods that purge the buffers, they can cause problems. You can force the game to purge more agressively with an ini edit, see section 3 here https://taleoftwowastelands.com/content/ttw-performance-guide

I did not realize that FNV made a system save at that point, I guess I just never noticed it before.

It just happened again and I did as you suggested but all it showed when I hovered over the "crash" save was a sort of grayish screen.

I do use a purge cell buffer mod that uses a hotkey to purge. I will take a look at the link you posted and try that. The PCB works quite well if I start to get stutter or lag when opening stuff but I did not realize it had the potential to cause problems.

I really do not think these crashes are mod related as sometimes I can play for four or five hours straight with no problems and it was only recently that I started to get these crashes accompanied by the system saves. I do think it might be a computer problem such as overheating or the system running background tasks which might be causing these crashes.

I usually make four or five manual saves an hour so if I get a crash going back to my last save is really no biggie though I only keep my last ten or so saves and delete the old ones. I never have seen the point in keeping a whole bunch of saves. I am one of those people who are constantly starting new games so if I have to go back for more than two or so hours I would just start a new game.

Just tried that TTW link and got a "page not found" message; will go to TTW site and look up the performance guide.

Went to the TTW site and made the changes to my ini files it recommended for purging cell buffers. Also made the changes recommended in NVIDIA Inspector. Played for over three hours and everything good so far.

I think you have a misconception about that systemsave I get. In the menu to load saves they are named for the location that you are at when you make the save, as I am sure you know, the save for the Penthouse would probably be named "Lucky 38". The save I get when I get a system save is named "crash" simply that and nothing else.

I guess the Lucky 38 one is to ensure you get loaded back there after the battle, a plain autosave would be overwritten. A save named "Crash" is a new one on me, I searched my save folder and didn't find one. I know how tempting it is to use PCB from the console and knowing that it can cause problems I still do it once in a while, it's very good for getting rid of that god awful ripper noise that sometimes won't go away.

You are undoubtedly correct about the reason for that save being designated something other than autosave. Where the confusion is, I believe, that the save I keep referring to was caused by FNV crashing. You are not alone in never having heard of one before. I have been playing FNV for six or seven years now and I had never come across this before.

That, of course, is why I asked about it in this forum.
