Did skyrim get riddled with game breaking bugs all of a sudden?

Seriously. The last week I've been having quest just not work. NPCs just standing there not doing anything. I decided it had to be mods causing this. But in the last two days with completely new characters and a fresh reinstall only using mods that change armor and bodies and add hair, I'm still getting broken quests that I've dont many times in the past without having them break.

For example, when I get to Markarth and do the conspiracy quest and end up in jail, the Orc just stands there and I'm stuck. When disabling all the mods I have, I get the same thing. I even tried going back to a previous auto save like 6 or 7 times before giving that up. With the same mods installed however, and a new character, I went to do that quest right away and the whole thing worked. But then when I go to do the thieves guild I get up to the point where I'm suppose to listen Mercer Frey so he can recruit me. But he just stands there and it says he's busy. So here I am stuck again, disabling all the mods, knowing they cant be the problem, and of course they still don't work.

Is the game not playable like this for anyone else? I'd imagine either no one is even doing these quests that often or I'm the only one who goes to forums noticing this or these bugs are only happening to me so frequently all of a sudden

Im having similar issues. Over the weekend I tried to play through the end of the Thieves Guild Quest as well as the end of the Main quest line. I was unable to talk to Karliah who is a vital character to the thieves quests. She would sit there and say, "huh?" instead of giving me a dialogue box. Thinking this was a one off thing, I skipped ahead with the console and found that every time I needed to proceed by talking to her, or relied on her to perform an action (like opening a gate) she simply would sit there and do nothing. Then I tried doing the debate portion of the main quest line and after I sat down my character was eventually qued for input. However (in an imperial playthrough) Tulius never opened the dialogue box for me. I had to enable player controls via the console, walk over to him and activate him manually to get the options. I get the feeling that, for me, this might have something to do with the recent beta update via steam. B/c I haven't made any changes to my game aside from that update. I'll keep an eye out for a solution, but i get the feeling it might be on Bethesda's end.

Yeah this sounds like the problems I'm having only with different quests. I never downloaded the 1.6 beta though, unless it downloads automatically or something. Either way, I have nothing play with Skyrim in this state.

I'm having a serious problem with Delvin Mallory right now. He keeps repeating the same sentence and no dialogue options appear after I completed 5 jobs in Windhelm. It's holding me back from finishing the dark brotherhood quest line and becoming the guild master of the thieves guild. It's kind of annoying.

I think I may have "fixed" the problem.

I'm kinda thinking it was all the bsa files in the data folder. When I did was just completely delete those mods and installed the loose file versions if there were any. I got rid of the DLC texture pack and am using one of the popular ones.

I also opted in for the 1.6 beta and then got the SKSE for 1.6 since some of the mods like like using require it. I also decided to leave out mods that I supected could have been screwing up the navmesh, namely the "All female guards" and "All female soldiers" mod which also caused other bugs and problems with NPCs. If anyone who had/has these problems didn't use that mod though, then I guess it's fine.

I'm gonna keep playing the same save file to see if I eventually run into the navmesh error, but so far everythings been really smooth.

Since some people mentioned they have 1.6 and still get errors, I'm gong to go ahead and assume the best bet for this error is have too many unofficial .bsa files, the official HD DLC, and a bunch of folders that can end up in the data folder due to installing via NMM and modders putting random folders in their mod packages. If I run into the glitch I'll definitely come back and report it.

I can verify that it's not that, Jinxxed0. I ran into a similar problem right at the beginning of the game on a new character, where the quest to kill the dragon in Whiterun never starts. I turned off all my mods and still couldn't get it to work at first, then tried it with and without mods and using the console to manually advance the quest and got no results, so I did a completely fresh install with no mods whatsoever, not even textures. I had nothing in my Data folder except the .bsa files from Bethesda. Still, the issue persists. Short of trying it out on a different computer, there's nothing else I could do. I'm pretty certain this issue is on Bethesda's end.

Did you try getting the 1.6 beta?

also, when you get the navmesh error you have to start a new character cause that save will likely be glitched forever.

After doing all the stuff I mentioned above, my game doesn't seem to have the issue. But I'm not holding my breath as I expect it to pop up any moment now

No, I'd worried that Steam had done one of their stealth updates to the 1.6 beta, but I just checked and I'm on 1.5.26.

I just tried it on a fresh character with the new install (haven't put my mods back in yet, so can't really enjoy the game as is) and still the quest doesn't start. I dunno if the patch beta would be any help, but nothing else is, so it would have to do something pretty bad to hurt.

Have any of you been using any other mod managers other than NexusMM? I know that that can be a real problem right from the get go as they do not have way to interchange info to find these kinds of conflicts.

Just a thought :)

These quest bugs are NOT new and are NOT because of mods. They are all a result of the same problem with the game engine, most likely as they are all the same essential issue: A quest refuses to advance, usually because the needed NPC (which included Alduin, in my case) does not appear or does not respond...

It seems the coding is sloppy and the game just randomly drops its scripts whenever it feels like it. Events, including your advance in the game, seem to have a probability of occuring rather than being scripted to occur. In this manner , the bugs only occur in some games, making them hard to track down .

You can report the bug in some forum, then somebody else will post saying the quest works fine for them, and people will ignore you, thinking you screwd up.

Imagine how impressed I was when , afte a long and hard adventure, I found The Elder Scroll and went up to The Throat of The World to receive the vision, Alduin never showed up , the vision was stuck and I was forced to reload and re-watch this stuck scene over and over trying to get it to conclude. Didn’t work, had to bring up the console to force the quest to advance.

Yeah, that was "immersive" , right at one of the game's most crucial scenes. I was really impressed by that one.
