Cannot enable mods

Hey, had a few years' break from the game since I near 100%ed and couldn't install any mods. Returned to try again, same problem.

Previously I could edit the .inis but mods didn't work, now I can't even get that far.

When attempting to make the edit to Fallout4Custom.ini and Fallout4.ini (I understand editing prefs isn't required now) it fails to save saying 'I do not have permission to open this file, contact the owner or administrator for information'- I am the only user, and have full permissions. Thus, I can't even get past this stage. Any ideas?

Thanks

i take it you are on windows 10, and said files are on your C:Drive, which is protected by windows 10 security, (User Account Control) is possibly blocking modification of sensitive documents due to where they are placed.

in other words, windows 10 changes permissions for files, documents, etc etc on any file that happens to be on C:Drive, which is why people recommend not installing to your C:Drive.

Note: even with full permission, windows 10 can still block modifications, to documents, possibly caused by windows defender. however all of this only applies to anything on the C:Drive (Main OS Drive) placing anything on any other drive, has no restrictions, unless setup manually by the user. probably some kind of anti-virus protection

a few things you can try:

1. Turn of User Account Control - Click on Start - Control Panel - User Accounts - Click on Change User Account Control Settings - Drag the Slider Down to Never Notify - Click on Ok - Restart Your Machine - Try Changing The Fallout4.ini files again.

let me know if the above works, if not we will continue.
