Boethians Calling

The only thing I don't understand about the Ebony Mail - why is it Heavy? No doubt it was designed for thief/assassin type of characters, but they use Light armor! Or was it made to try to "balance" heavy armored warrior characters?

Anyway, it is good!

This is an assumption. Just because they chose to activate it with the sneak button doesn't mean it was ever intended to be for thieves, and in fact since it's a daedric artifact it's far more likely it was intended for all styles of play.

Agreed, I can't think of anywhere that it states or even implies that it's "meant for thief/assassin type players" A full suit of Ebony Chainmail can't be anything BUT heavy, and the poison effect completely negates the stealth enhancement because you automatically "attack" any hostile NPC, giving away your position instantly ...

Boethiah's all about assassinations and secret plots. If they're just using sneak on that armor to trigger an AoE damage aura that screws with actually doing assassination business, I have no idea what to think of that. It seems silly and poorly thought out.

I have never had the armor myself. I killed the whole camp to avoid the risk of them luring any innocents there to sacrifice them.

You can still complete the quest, Boethiah is a Daedric Prince after all, and actually thanks you for killing all those 'weak' worshipers ... Just activate the shrine and you'll still be given the quest ...

Actually I was referring to its muffling effect. And the fact any enemy approaching your character supposedly armed with a bow (favourite thieves'/assassins' weapon in a number of previous chapters) will be finished by the poison cloak in case you didn't get him with arrows. And archery without sneak mode is quite useless. I think Ebony Mail is a perfect armor for archers, but it seemed to me archers are supposed to wear light armor.

Why is Archery useless without sneak mode?

Why must Archers wear Light Armor?

Making assumptions and sweeping statements should ALWAYS be prefixed or appended with IMHO or IMO, because some of us actually think through our character builds and plan point and perk allotment accordingly.

I have a lvl 63 Wood Elf "Ranger" who only has 33 in sneak but is 100 in Archery and 100 in Heavy Armor with he Perk trees maxed out on both. I don't use the Ebony Mail (though the character has collected it) Because it's NOT HEAVY ENOUGH! I use Dragon Plate instead, If (and it's a big if) Someone manages to get past the blistering barrage of arrows, my toon can take a few hits and block with the bow long enough to be able to get the kill.

Use cover, attack at night, wait for patrols to be moving away from you before moving, find the high ground so they can't get to you ... Dodge! ... You don't have to one hit kill every enemy in the game and you don't have to do it all in the space of 15mins, take your time and being an Archer (without sneak) is very satisfying ... IMHO

since it activates on being targeted by an enemy, its pretty safe to say its not aligned to any specific profession. I almost can safely say, its not intended for a thief at all. Like stated it is a Daedric item. It's just got a stealth mode built in. Makes getting your big axe a little close before you cleave.

I personally only wear armor for looks. I don't like large and objectionable armor/weapons. the turning black with stink pouring off you is not to my liking.

Like I mentioned somewhere before, I always speak for myself. Like anyone, I think. If someone says that something is something, it doesn't mean that it's indeed so, it means only that this "someone" thinks this "something" is that "something". I thought it was obvious. Sorry.

And I always thought that IMO (and IMHO) is just a fugure of speech, cause everything you say is only your oppinion. Noone knows the absolute truth. Well, noone in our world.

As for your questions... Both in Morrowind and Oblivion both Archery (or Marksmanship, or whatever it was called) and Light Armor were skills of Thief (Stealth or whatever) category. That's why Arches there were supposed to wear Light Armor.

As for Archery without sneak mode... Well, I've killed an Ancient Dragon with the Sparks spell once. It was Vanilla Sparks spell, not some modded version. Back in Morrowind I killed a giant netch with a fork. There's a number of ways to entertain youself. But I always preferred (and still do) to remember Sun Tzu and his phrase: "I've heared of many swift victorious campaigns, but I've never heared of prolonged victorious ones". Sorry, if I don't quote him correctly - I've read his work in my native language, of course.

PS: And I've made Ebony Mail light in my private mod anyway.
