Morrowind/Oblivion style armour pieces?

I would really like a mod that would bring back the armour system from Morrowind or Oblivion. I want this because I dislike the armour system in Skyrim, there is fewer armour variety and every bandit looks the same. I liked how you could really customise your character back in morrowind by having separate armour pieces that you could mix and match, E.G having two different shoulder-pads. I'm sure the fundamentals of the mod shouldn't be too difficult, would it be just a matter of creating armour slots and cutting up the meshes of the existing armour pieces and assigning them new items?

I am sure there would be more people who are interested in this sort of mod.

Thanks.

I would venture to say that you have not done a lot of work in Blender and the CK if you are willing to make such an optimistic assertion. The Skyrim game system does not really support this mod idea. The cuirass, greaves, and left and right pauldrons all go in one slot in Skyrim and people have been having trouble trying to get the unused slots to work for things like capes.

Supposing that modelers spent hundreds of labor hours making new models for all these armor pieces, then the job still would not be very close to being done. Next would come the CK work. In order to deploy these new models, a leveled list overhaul mod would have to be built to edit all the outfits, vendor lists, clutter lists, treasure lists, and crafting recipes to include the new armor pieces.

Indeed, it would have been better if Bethesda had built the game right and done it like Morrowind, but I fear that this mod idea is too hard and will never be built.

There's something similar to this for UNP. It's not a full-featured thing for both genders, but it's worth a look. It at least shows that the concept is possible, though it would be very difficult to do it for everything of both genders.

  • 8 months later...

I've been playing with the Creation Kit for a few months now, and, while I have no talent for Blender, and other tools for creating custom armors, I would venture a guess that it actually wouldn't be terribly difficult to simply edit each piece of Vanilla armor so that it is just a basic piece of armor that can be assembled into a larger armor. I'm not entirely sure what slots are available in the editor, but I do remember there being enough to allow capes and other bits (the head alone is broken up into either the entire HEAD or hair, circlet, long hair, etc.). I don't think this would be an entirely difficult mod to make, just extremely tedious and time consuming. If I had the skill, I'd work on it because I like the idea.

However, applying the mod to all NPCs would be ridiculous. The reason the armor is set up like it is is so that more NPCs can be in the same location at the same time. Nevertheless, it would be cool for the player.

I want this so bad too! I don't whether new armors you download like immersive armors don't have all the different slots, but at least vanilla covered! There is this mod called Grieves Return which adds new slots, though, it's not as good. It doesn't add any variety to bandits and that stuff, which is exactly what it is all about!

I personally do use Greaves Return, even though it's incompatible with any of my armor mods, simply because I love actually having more choice over my armor.

Yes, this would take a long time to do. Yes, it would be incompatible with mod-added armors. But no, it's not a waste of time! Providing the foundation is enough for other modders to start to work with it (whoever goes about making this should give auto-permissions to make mods that require it), especially if it's turned into an ESM.
