Fallout 4 sometime uses 8GB VRAM and drops to 1 FPS until restart

It is a very weird issue. And I noticed by accident that it is the VRAM that is causing this behavior. Sometimes my 8GB of Memory on the GPU runs full when playing FO4 and then the game starts stuttering like crazy and in the end running at 1 FPS until I restart it.

How is this even possible? Btw, it makes no difference whether I use the High Resolution Texture pack or not! This makes it even stranger. Sometimes in heavy load area the game just decides to trash my VRAM.

Is that a known issue and is it fixable? I usually only have it in 1+ hour sessions at some random point like inside dungeons. Is a mod causing this? I mean, what would cause this high VRAM usage? I am not using many HD texture mods. It is really crazy. The game runs on 1080p Ultra settings with Shadow Distance on Medium.

Oh sorry that isn't my load order. Its just the export from Modorganizer2 which for some reason doesnt list it in order. But it is properly ordered by myself & the sorting LOOT plugin.

Why doesn't it sort it in the export? They should really add that function into the csv export.

I will try the Bashed Patch.

EDIT: Ok done with the patch. The Merged/Bashed patch doesn't fix the issue. I usually always use Merged Patches with other Bethesda games, not in FO4 though, mainly because FO4Edit says its experimental and not supported.

This video actually describes EXACTLY the problem I have. Sometimes the game just randomly drops to like 1FPS. No matter whether indoors or outdoors and from my GPU Monitor tools I see that the VRAM is 90-100% full and skyrockets from like 4GB to 8GB in a few seconds. I don't even see what would possible fill 8GB VRAM without HD Textures. I played this game on my 3.5GB GTX 970 and never had such a issue there...

I have no other games with such issues. Even Skyrim SE doesn't have that issue and they have practically same engine from what I can gather. I also already tried a clean reinstall of my drivers but no dice. It also can't be the savegame since I have that in multiple games or saves.

Maybe it is just the engine which can't handle my game or hardware but it does wonder me. I am not the first with that issue and so far didn't find a real fix for it. Not even putting down all my settings to the absolute low fixes this, wtf? So either a mod causes this or it is really the game or engine. I also tried to disable some mods. Those that I think could "theoretically" cause something like this like graphic mods or mods that do huge changes in the game but nothing fixed the issue.

try making a cleans save, go back to sanctuary and go in the cellar behind that one house then do this, below

Make sure you have no followers or pets with you, or robots - you want to be the ONLY creature in there when you do this

1) save

2) exit the game

3) start the game again and then save again

4) start the game again

5) load the newest save you just made

**IF** it's being caused by a defunct script, that method usually fixes it

Hm. I tried this. But sadly didn't change the issue. Thanks for the help.

I actually had a talk with my GF about this issue since she often uses my PC to game. And she said she sometimes had this issue too and she didn't use any mods at all. This issue seemed to start when I got the new 1070Ti.

I hardly doubt that its the GPUs fault though, more like Fallout 4s Engine does something terribly wrong with VRAM usage on this specific GPU. The old GTX 970 never had those problems.

Of course it can be that it is faulty but considering the amount of games I played and the only game with this issue is Fallout 4, I hardly doubt it. Could still try a clean install of my whole system but that goes a bit overboard for this issue. It is fine like that. I only suffer all few hours from it and going back to main menu and loading the game (to empty VRAM) fixes it. But ultimately I think its either my GPU or something in my Windows system. Probably nearly impossible to find the actual culprit. :/

Still, if anybody recalls such weird behavior and perhaps a fix for it, would be cool if you share your knowledge!

wait

you're saying you changed video cards?

What ever was the old video card go to the manfufacturers website and look for a "clean uninstall program"

it may very well be left over drivers ( or registry entries ) from the old video card

Hi

I use 7.5gbs vram max every time I play fallout 4. The textures in my game are vanilla. With the High Resolution pack I use more.

The amount of vram used at 1080 is the same at 1440 & 4k. Most of the games I play use more vram at higher resolutions. Oblivion, Fallout 3, Skyrim/SE & Fallout 4 are the exceptions.

My high vram usage is caused by NPCs. The older the save, the more NPCs & the more vram used.

When I used a GTX 1080 I would get bad frame rate/stutter in some interiors & with some driver updates exteriors as well. When it happened the only thing I could do was save, then switch off the game & switch it back on again. It never happened with my GTX 980 ti & it is not happening with my GTX 1080 ti.

Check your temps on your i7 6700k. I had lots of heat issues when playing this game with that chip. The high temps come in spikes that trigger safeguards to protect the CPU & that destroys frame rate.
