3rd Person View: Char doesn't look at NPC

I have seen a forum thread on this previously (not sure where) so I'm thinking it is an issue common to the game. I know in my game, when trying to take a screen shot of various events, it is rare that NPCs are looking at each other, which is a bit annoying at times.

As for a fix, I have not looked for one, but I am thinking there probably isn't as that would take some work to accomplish and likely need to be in the game files rather than in a mod. I'm thinking the developers focused on Skyrim as a 1st person perspective game as 3rd person views are pretty weird overall.

I thought he was complaining about the character model for the PC, which is why I didn't reply. You're always positioned behind the character in third person so I don't know how he should face the NPC's if you don't point the character that way.

But if he's talking about NPC's, I have noticed they do have a tendency to look at the PC, regardless of whether they know he's there or not (like when you're sneaking). If there's a mass conversation going such as when you enter a town and there's a scripted event, if you get close enough the NPC's face usually will focus on you instead of the person they're addressing.

Bandits will sometimes look right at you while you're sneaking, but not register you being there.

I'm still amazed sometimes with my character's sneak being so high that sometimes npc's will literally bump into me and not attack.

I sort of chronicle my games with screenshots – speaking with the Whiterun Jarl the first time I meet him, the Nightingale ceremony, the Companions ceremony, etc. – any sort of significant event. I try and take screenshots in 3rd person and usually rotate the camera view angle to get a good picture rather than just a picture from behind my PC, but sometimes my PC is not looking at who is talking or who my PC is talking to, even when my PC is facing them in 1st person. My PC (and other NPCs) may be staring off at something else when I change to 3rd person, and it is quite obvious when changing the camera angle to get a good picture.

I have also tried screen shots of my character shooting an arrow at someone. In 1st person everything is lined up, but on changing to 3rd person it looks like the PC is shooting off to one side or the other – sometimes almost 90 degrees off.

I’m not sure if this is caused by changing to the free camera by console or rotating the view or what, but it is something I’ve noticed that occurs from time to time.

I think that may be what the OP was talking about, but I'll let them clarify what it was they are asking about.

Yeah, I use the console as little as possible. I know you can spin the camera 360 when your weapon isn't equipped, and I'm aware there's a console command to let you just move the camera and not the PC, but like you said.... it's a free camera. It's entirely possible that the reason your PC is not looking at someone is because without you focusing the character, his AI has nothing to focus on.

Like you said, the OP can clarify for someone that might be able to help him. I gave up a long time ago trying to decide why little things like that are such a big deal to some people. It's a game, not a second life. I cringe every time I hear someone use the word 'immersion'.

The OP asks about a mod that lets the character´s head act like in oblivion, where you walked near a NPC and our character looked at it. I´m still hoping that someone makes a mod that allows us to move the characters head where the camera moves, there is a mod like that for oblivion (http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/24589). If I knew how to do it I would try but that´s beyond my skills. Edited by scot

You can press and hold the "F" key whilst your weapon is drawn in third person mode, this allows you to at least spin the camera 360deg. from a fixed distance ...

As for the PC not responding to dialogues or even looking at NPC's, it's a fairly well documented and almost universally annoying game "feature". Unfortunately I don't think anyone has come up with a fix yet. NPC's will sometimes look at other NPC's who are speaking, but their attention is easily drawn away, especially if the PC comes into there field of view

thank you guys; scot, you got it. In Oblivion the PC was looking at the near NPCs, in Skyrim the Dova just stare at the horizon. Shall we move this conversation to the Mod Request section?

i don't know the difficulty level of this kind of mod, but i would greatly apreciate and endorse it.
