Legal question about sound files

Hi. Just a quick question about something I'm unsure of, although I probably know the answer but you never know.

I didn't like the sound of the power armour, the sound it makes when it moves, the footsteps and the whirs and clanks. I think it sound like your wearing a mechanical bathtub, not the who knows how many tonnes of metal plates it is. So there's a clip on youtube of a film with a massive robot, this thing sounds like what it is....a massive killing machine with sounds to match. So I used Audacity to record what I wanted, converted the clips to xwm, and renamed them to the power armour footstep names in the files.

It sounds perfect, heavy....intimidating. So I just wanted to know is this anything I could release? Probably not but I'm not sure on this. If not, well I'll just have it for personal use.

the sound clips you've taken , are they from an old movie that is no longer copyright protected? is this from an actual movie , or some fan made project on YT?

also what is the length of these sound files?

Well it was from Robocop 2, this clip in particular: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6NWF0xE1MOw

So yeah, old now but still probably copyrighted.

The length of each clip is about the time of a single footstep, so about 1 second. Each one ranging from 5kb to 18.

The duration of copyright in these works is generally computed the same way as for works created on or after January 1, 1978: life plus 70 years or 95 or 120 years, depending on the nature of authorship. However, all works in this category are guaranteed at least 25 years of statutory protection.

Due to the U.S. Copyright Term Extension Act, no more films will automatically enter public domain in the United States until January 1, 2019, when the copyright will expire on films released in 1923 (and in 2020 films from 1924, and so on).

LOL :P

Unfortunately, in these cases, it's in our best interests to err on the side of caution and so we can't condone the use of copyrighted material. That said, using such content to create a new and original work of your own may be something we could possibly consider comfortable distributing.
