VIVIIX
So as most Skyrim players know, Bethesda decided to place scaled down versions of Cyrodiil and Morrowind outside the games borders. These areas are very easy to access by removing to games boundaries and crossing over the mountians. I have a few questions about these areas I hope someone can help me with: 1. When I walk down from the border gate by Riften I soon hit a point where the ground drops off, and all the ground textures beyond it aren't even solid. I've tried to stand on them , and fell through into the water. Why is this? 2. In the creation kit I moved the camera view from the Riften border gate towards the Morrowind area, and found... NOTHING! The low resolution ground textures I kept falling through weren't even there! Why is this? Is there a way to make them show up on the CK? Can they even be edited? Any help with these questions would be greatly appreciated.
Georgiegril
They don't work because they are outside the game boundaries. They are not fully constructed, they have no navmesh, etc. You are not intended to go there, and if you do, you get exactly what you are experiencing. It is only there to add visual effect to the game area around the borders. It's like if you go to a play, and decide to cross the stage and sneak behind the backdrop. You don't get the play, only some unused props.
David Brasher
It sounds like the distant LOD for the ground in those provinces is present. but the ground is not. (Perhaps they molded this ground, generated the distant LOD for it, and then deleted the ground to reduce file size?) It would be possible to rebuild the ground to cover up the distant LOD meshes. (Alternately, it would be possible to build ground the way you wanted it and then generate new distant LOD meshes to match more accurately.) It would be a very large job, but the land could be contoured and textured, and cluttered. Then things like critters and dungeons and villages and quests could be built. It would be a very large job, but I think some mod teams are already working on some projects like this.
VIVIIX
It would be possible to rebuild the ground to cover up the distant LOD meshes. How would I be able to rebuild the ground if it doesn't show up inside the creation kit? Would I have to run a second copy of the game and compare the landscape doing a sort of trial and error thing? Or is there a way to make the textures actually show up in the creation kit so I could build over them? also, i found this mod: http://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/18352 would this help me with my problem at all? the descriptions included with it are a bit vague (at least from my newbe perspective) Edited June 9, 2012 by VIVIIX
David Brasher
Worldspaces have no set size. You can just keep on making them bigger and bigger by pushing the edges out further and further. Cells with no edits are not included in the base game, DLC, or mod. Cells that DO have edits ARE included in the base game, DLC, or mod. But I guess the distant LOD is there, so the cell already has an edit. Whether or not the cell has been edited the land is there in the CK. It is just perfectly flat and down by the water. There is probably a huge landscape tear between the top of the cliff and the land down below. You open up the landscape editor in the CK and turn the sensitivity way up and go at it. When you move the land at the edge of the tear, it will heal and won't be a tear anymore. I guess actually you can't see the distant LOD in the CK so you would either have to bring the land up to the level of the distant LOD by trial and error or count on generating new distant LOD later on. (Be warned: the software is broken and people are having problems working around it.) Once you raise the land up, you can paint it with the proper textures and place clutter like rock and trees and plants. (It would take forever to raise the land up because the mountains are so high right there.) If the mod you linked to covers the area you are interested in, then it would be a great help to you.
