Elfriend
I plan to swallow my dislike for Steam and buy Skyrim on DVD. How large are the patches/updates that I will then have to download from Steam? I have a fast satellite ISP but am limited to 7.5 G/month, and my wife and I use about half of that with routine web browsing. I tried searching, but only came up with hundreds of pages for/against/about Steam. Thanks in advance.
MrTastix
Not sure on previous patches but I believe they ranged from anywhere between 20 and 100mb. The latest beta patch is just over 200mb. Frankly though, I'd still say it's worth it, and I'm on a horrible data cap myself (not as bad as yours, though).
Elfriend
Thank you, MrTastix. That's not a problem, then. Normally the data cap is not an issue, since we don't watch streaming movies or listen to music on-line. We did burn up 1.5 G watching the live NASA feed of the Venus transit, though! Maybe next month.
chikawowwow
If you have access to another computer (maybe a friend) who can download it for you, you could then use the 'backup & restore' games feature on Steam. Save Skyrim to USB, install Steam on your PC, log in, and restore Skyrim!! No bandwidth usage!Just be sure to activate Skyrim on your Steam account and not your Friends. JimboUK
https://support.steampowered.com/kb_article.php?ref=5357-FSQM-0382 Follow this to make sure it does install from disk and doesn't download instead, otherwise you can wave goodbye to your 7.5GB. Elfriend
Thanks for the heads-up, jim_uk. I actually found that advice while researching the game, but could easily have missed it. Why would anyone assume that the game couldn't be installed directly from the purchased disc? Why do I get the impression that I've crossed over into the Twilight Zone? I loved Morrowind until I got seduced by Neverwinter Nights 2, so I thought Skyrim would be a great choice. This Steam thing creeps me out, though. Maybe I should just get a cheap copy of Oblivion and call it good enough.
