MacSuibhne
Here I am many hours into the game, level 37 and I still don't know what the main quest is comprised of. I was at the Sacellum of Boethia last night and essentially walked away from the whole thing...unwilling to sacrifice anyone. I refused to eat human flesh and killed the person who tried to convince me...and as a result that quest was marked failed. I have a few others like this...not pursuing the Theives Guild or the DB ...but it worries me because I don't know which quests are important to the MQ simply because I am not sure what the main quest really is? Is it killing Alduin?
Lyanheart
Researching and dealing with the return of the dragons, meeting with the greybeards, and yes, hunting down Alduin are all done through the "main" quest.
fraquar
Go ahead, eat the flesh. It tastes like chicken....... Throw a little fire salts on it and you are golden.
MurmurSix
I may be wrong but I think the only quest that has any impact on the main quest at all is the Imperial Legion/Stormcloak quest line. And completing that before doing the main quest lets you skip a quest that you'd otherwise have to do. There could be others that have an effect, I am by no means super knowledgeable on all things Skyrim.

I've done the first half or so right up to Alduin's Wall (maybe I've done that too) and I've been to see and talk to Paarthurnax. And I'm working on Elder Knowledge. So I guess I'm on track. Relativelybest
Go ahead, eat the flesh. It tastes like chicken....... Throw a little fire salts on it and you are golden. What's the point of being a cannibal in Skyrim, anyway? It was useful in Fallout 3 as a way to regenerate health and made sense what with the apocalypse and all, but Skyrim is full of food that you can even cook into actual meals and you regen health automatically. Well, being a cannibal maybe can be strange but there are some advantages,( i think that have no advantages).

I think the devs. wanted to aid the fastplaying types, by letting the characters healh grow and regenarate while not having to spend money on potions or ingredients or having to go back to a town if they run out of them. Plus the 50 Stamina bonus is nice.
Dovahkiin069
The main quest is nothing but an illusion man, nothing but an illusion.
