Freezing on dragon logo

Hello all. Been away for a while and when I came back to use my computer Skyrim will no longer run. I have tried to do all the sound tweaks and no luck with those. Changed the compatibility a few times and still no luck. The Bethesda logo comes up and the sound plays, then the dragon logo appears, no sound plays but the smoke in the background swirls. Also the menu selections never appear. But in the task manger the game says running and no issue showing.

I am running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit SP1 with all relevant updates. I believe Steam has updated Skyrim to the latest update. I have a AMD Phenom 2 X6 1055T 2.80GHZ processor, 4GB DDR3 memory, an NVIDIA GeForce 9800GT 1GB with the latest drivers and using my motherboards onboard sound device (motherboard is a ASUS M4A88T-M on device manager the sound is listed as VIA High Definition Audio) so the computer is more than capable of running the game. I played for over 200 hours before so I don't get why now it doesn't run.

Any help or advice would be much appreciated, Cheers.

Im still at a loss. Is there any custom patches anywhere to solve it? Otherwise looks like I will have to just bin the game.

Since, you've been gone for "awhile" as you stated; there's a good chance that Steam updated your game to 1.6. Some of your mods may need updating; or your (if your using it) SKSE may be out of date. Try rerunning your "Local files check" through the team Settings, you may have a corrupt file; it should pick it up and replace it. I'm actually on close to 380 hrs; dang things like TIMEX; takes a licking, keeps on ticking......so far at least.

I have been dealing with what sounds like same issue since the 1.6. I suspect it is related to a mod, maybe a mod conflicting to new bethesda files. I am in the process of checking my 50 mods... (sigh).

I have the 9800 GT 512 (evga), and I also had to do a complete, clean reinstall after the new drivers came up with their own (crazy) overclocking settings. There was a good article on the evga forum about why a clean reinstall is absolutely neccessary for the 3.x updates. evga link

In the meantime, have you tried the ctrl/alt/delete then cancel workaround? That has been working fine for me. Not a fix, but it does let me play. Hope it might help you.

If you are stuck on the load screen, hit ctrl-alt-del simultaneously to bring up the task manager. However, do not open the task manager, hit the cancel button. this will bring you back to your game, which should open. This should work if you give it "normal" loading time.

BTW, I just figured out my hang issue....the patch overwrites your pref.ini files. I knew that, and went back to check the settings. HOwever, I forgot to check for lines I had added. These were deleted. In my case, I had changed my default FOV by adding lines in both the .ini and prefs.ini files. My .ini file lines were untouched, but the patch deleted my pref.ini line, which caused the hang. I replaced it, and now it's loading normally. I don't know if this applies to you, but if you have changed, added anything to your pref.ini, you may want to have a close look.
