Most of info on this thread is rather outdated, but for what's it worth, here are my findings:
Latest NifScope, at least, is not too friendly with OBJ imports/exports as far as SSE is concerned.    So my own workflow looks like this:

From SSE to Blender - option 1 is to load a .nif in OutfitStudio, select one or more of its meshes, and then File - Export - OBJ.    Then, In Blender, File - Import - Wavefront obj.   Select a file, and make sure to change 'Forward Axis' to Y, and check 'Split by Object' and 'Validate Meshes'.    This imports just the shape + its UV maps - but no materials, no armature or anything.

Option 2 to is to use the PyNifly  plugin by BadDogSkyrim.    This can directly import an SSE nif file  into Blender, along with its defined bones, bone weights, and such.   The imported mesh in Blender will be 10x the sze of same mesh imported via .obj.  I have not yet worked with this plugin a lot though.

Next, once you are done in Blender and want to  go back, you can export as .obj - and again, make sure to set Y as 'Forward axis'

Then you can import the ,obj into the Outfit Studio.   Very important!!!   When importing, you want to have at least some mesh loaded in OutfitStudio as reference.   I.e. import a .nif, right-click a mesh, and choose 'Set Reference' so it appears in green.    Then, can export the nif as needed from OutfitStudio.
