Rennn
In our society nudity equates to pornography. Bethesda would lose a lot of customers by producing pornographic instead of mainstream games. Pornographic games are available, but they are a very small niche market not up to the big budget productions of Bethesda. Plus when you consider that Bethesda is switching to multiplayer games you compound the issue. Just not going to happen. I do wonder sometimes what the developers play in their personally modded games. Rabbit I have no idea what kind of society you live in, but let's not equate nudity with pornography, it isn't the same thing at all. IDK, but there seems to be an upsurge of moral outrage and New Puritanism at the moment that really has me concerned. And as for putting "realism" in quote marks, InuyashaFE, don't we all have a naked body under our clothes? This. Now for my own response... I understand why Bethesda didn't add nudity; it would be commercial suicide. Games that take a more serious approach usually don't sell too well. If it gets an AO rating, the Devs may as well give up on turning a profit. Case and point: The Void. Never heard of it? That's not surprising, considering that it featured male and female nudity throughout to compliment its very unique art style. Not even a low price could save it from the societal view of nudity. Bethesda might never put nudity in another Elder Scrolls game. For me, it's both a matter of realism and overcoming stigma. It feels really weak to me when an otherwise serious, deep game sticks perma-underwear on all their characters to avoid... what? Why do that? It's actually more work to model, align, and texture the underwear than it is to make a body nude. Underwear isn't the default position of the human body, so it's not a matter of "why?", it's a matter of "Why not?", and societal bias answers the "Why not?" question. Stemin
And they shouldn't, considering it's Rated M, so that excuse is irrelevant. Which is mature, not adult only.
Rennn
And they shouldn't, considering it's Rated M, so that excuse is irrelevant. Which is mature, not adult only. When I turned from 17 to 18, I didn't feel a miraculous wave sweep over me. There was no giant voice proclaiming "You're now allowed to look at the human body without being scarred for life." It's a societal view, that's all.

I guess you didn't read the thread where the grandmother was letting everyone on the Nexus know how proud she was of her 8 year old grandaughter who can play Skyrim. If you think parents are denying their kids these games because of the mature rating, you're badly mistaken. If think they won't pay a bit more attention when the checkout registers 18 year old content because of an adult only label, then I would also have to disagree. BTW, none of which answers the question of why you need this in your game in the first place. Edited June 15, 2012 by Stemin

Agreed... @SteminNudity is the default state of humanity. It 'needs' to be in games, because there's no reason to add perma-underwear. You're thinking of it reversed, as if nudity is something we would add to games. It's something that's deliberately removed only because of a false cultural bias, not the other way around. Besides, I think you mistook my last post. The difference from M to AO is only 17 to 18 years old, that's why I used that example. You pointed out that M wasn't AO, so I pointed out that there's almost no difference between a 17 year old and an 18 year old. 8 year olds have nothing to do with it. As tame as Skyrim is most of the time, it's not really a game for 8 year olds. You can use the 18 is almost 17 is almost 16 is almost 15 argument, but this tangent we're both on is void because we're not even talking about mature content like violence here. As for violence in games, I'd consent to rate it more strictly if there was anything to replace it. Sadly, nobody has yet invented a nature-walk medieval adventure game with minimal combat. I'm still waiting for that one... Edited June 15, 2012 by Rennn
kingdeath
This is what I don't get, So the game starts off your on the back of the wagon and the it stops, you get out and then something horrific happens... We all knows what happens (and this happens twice)and some say this is a kid friendly game, well some one said that kids play this game lol. lets talk about all the unnecessary violence in this game, kill cams and be-headings is it really necessary.... The answer is hell no. they do it for "story" and "realism". Why is it O.K. to kill and show the most horrific things you can see and it gets and M rating but show one boob and people freak, and if you think you slapped some boobs in this game you get an A/O rating think again ;Duke Nukem, God of War and Red Dead Redemption just to name a few. So when it comes to "story" and "realism" why not slap some nudity in the game ..... Oh two more games I all most forgot that has it all ....... "THE WITCHER" and "THE WITCHER 2" games that run with the big dogs and these games are doing very well

Seviraph
the argument works both ways, why add Nudity?why remove Nudity? what is the point? if you're talking realism, why are you trying to loot someone's underwear after you killed them?how much of an impact on your gameplay is having or not having nudity going to make?how much of the "story" does nudity impact? and also I think, people should stop using the word realism for games based in a fantasy setting, there's a different word that I can't quite recall just yet (it's related to logical, or practical) that would suit it better (can someone help me with this one?) but personally, I prefer the game without nudity
