Off-Hand books

Would it be possible to carry a book in your hand, for the more mage type players?

I think it would be kind of cool to carry around a huge spell tome in the left hand and throwing fire or ice at an attacking enemy.

And for practical use of the book, it can be held up, like a shield, and casts a ward.

i too always thought it would be nice to have a spell book in an elderscrolls, like in aion online, eden eternal and such. my thoughts where more along the lines of having the book in the off hand aswell but then the pages scrolling when the main hand is about to cast or something, but that would be annoying to make and glitchy at best i assume.

i always hoped bethesda would one day stop making buyable spells / tomes and just have a spell book that one can equipped, which would either store all ones spells in it which can then be cast with the main hand. or it would have all the spells in that spell books school of magic that is unlocked so far, meaning there would be a spell book for each school. but.. seems this will likely never happen as it ends up always being staff or open hand. It just seems to make more sense to me is all, for example you can take a warriors weapons aways to place them in jail but what about a mage? they would just be’able to bust out with magic.. However if the spells where only in the books then the mage would be disarmed of them when in jail or w/e and thus for being as venerable as other classes in cases like this.

It would be epic if you could, as you said, put it up, like a ward. What it would require was that, instead of learning the spell, you must use the book, and if you equip it, it would shoot the spell OUT of the book when you use it. This would require a complete overhaul of all spell tomes, but it would be cool to see guys pointing books at each other, and the magic literally flowing off the pages into real spells. That would cause many incompatibilities, but it would be very cool.

Never thought of that, but that is very true.

You could also resolve this by making the spells only castable through a "Mage's staff" (which would have no power of it's own other than allowing the mage to cast whatever spells he/she has learned, or say stripping them of everything but the simplest spells like healing).

This would also open the door for adding another benefit of levelling up the magic schools - high enough ranked mages could be allowed to cast without a staff.

The book idea is much cooler, but the above (assuming someone hasn't done it already) would probably be much easier for someone to make.

I had a very similar idea recently of creating "Focuses" these focuses could be anything from book to staffs to orbs. These focuses would have special benefits for certain schools of magic or even specific spells that are used with the focusing item. For example the going back to the idea of a book lets say you have a book of restoration the effects of which are fortify restoration 15 in addition you can go into your books and read how it changes all your restoration spells while it is equipped healing hands will heal twice as much for only 1.5X the magicka cost or it will inflict constant damage to undead or summoned enemies. Wards gain a spell absorption effect ect ect

I actually got this idea first while thinking of additional deadric artifacts and thought it would be really cool to add a sigal stone as a focusing orb for destruction magic. you could also have focusing times for master level spells like guardian circle that will reduce casting time as well as cast banish on any deadra that enter the circle or any number of additional effects as for the animation it would be really cool if as you started casting the book would float out of your hands and just hover in front of you. Anyway that is my 2 cents and ideas on this topic to add focus items weather that is a book or and orb or even and elder scroll.
