Question about unofficial patch and mods for first playthrough

Hey guys i just bought Oblivion Game of the Year Edition Deluxe today and this is my very first time playing this game and i would like to ask some question. Do i need to install all 3 unofficial patch that made by QuarnAndKivan and Official Oblivion 12416 Patch even though i have GOTY deluxe edition ?

And i need some suggestion about mods. What mods should i install even for first play through ? i need mod that help about game play and fix glitches or bug, without removing vanilla games feel from this game since this my very first time playing this game.

Also does installing mods with NMM always recommended ?

Thanks in advance.

1. If you have GOTY deluxe edition, no official patch will be needed.

2. Doesn't deluxe edition come with all DLCs? If so, you'll need to install all unofficial patches.

3. For first play, just try with unofficial patches and EngineBugFixes(it's OBSE plugin, you must install OBSE as well). Then when you feel like you want something, you can ask about them.

4. NMM is mostly, not recommended for Oblivion mods. Many mods are released before NMM, and even some newer mods may not be packaged for NMM-friendly. Learning how to install and manage mods with OBMM and Wrye Bash will help you.

Where did you bought GotY Delxue? Is it a Steam version or is it a retail version (buying it from a local game store or via Amazon)?

1. That's correct.

2. Yes and no. GotY only have KotN and Shiverling Isle while the other DLC needs to be installed separately. However, I recall that the GotY Deluxe comes with all nine DLC, but I'm not entirely sure about that. If all DLC is included then all Unoffical Patches (UOP) needs to be installed provided that the actual DLC is installed that is.

3. I wouldn't recommend anyone using OBSE when one has never played Oblivion before, instead only install the expansions e.g KotN and Shiverling Isle along with the UOP. Besides, using a Steam version has issues with the orginal OBSE, so I suggest that the OP go to either here or here and ask the people there about using OBSE with a Steam version.

4. Bad idea about using OBMM (I know how things works and only use OBMM for the DarN Dark UI mod, nothing else), but learning Wrye Bash has a steep learning curve I know. Here is an excellent Wrye Bash Pictorial Guide and a lot of people have learned Wrye Bash via that guide. Remember, only Wrye Bash can handle a modded game and some mods requires the bashed patch in Wrye Bash otherwise the mod won't work. I also know some mods cannot be active, without using a bashed patch, when launching Oblivion without having a CTD. Wrye Bash (the last link in the second post is the latest stable) is essential when it comes mod managing.

Thought I'd chime in as well.

1. Agreed

2. Confirmed that GOTY Deluxe contains every available DLC - Shivering Isles, Knights of the Nine, and the minor ones. Therefore I'd recommend installing every available unofficial patch.

3. Agreed that, for a first playthrough, you shouldn't install ANY mods - just patches. You can decide what to install after that playthrough. Frankly, you shouldn't need to worry about OBSE, NMM, OBMM, or anything of that nature. There are only a few things that I'd deem absolutely necessary: the unofficial patches, BOSS or LOOT (to make sure things load in the correct order), and maybe Wrye Bash (to make sure the various DLCs "play nicely" together - not really needed when it's ONLY official mods).

4. I kind of covered that above.

The key here is that you want to experience vanilla Oblivion, without any changes, at least once. If you REALLY want to get into it, there's a lot more you can do - and the list is overwhelming: the aforementioned EngineBugFixes (which requires OBSE), Oblivion Stutter Remover (also requires OBSE), FastExit2 (also requires OBSE), BSAOpt (to optimize the BSA files), PyFFI (to optimize the meshes), Ordenador (to optimize the textures), Oblivion Uncut (to see some of the content Bethesda created or at least started but didn't put in the final), Consistent Beggar Voices (additional voice file fixes), Weapon Expansion Pack for Oblivion Nthusiasts (additional weapon fixes), Dialog Tweaks (more dialog fixes), Idle Dialogue (restored conversations), Ring of Console (if you're not able to access the console through the tilde key), and probably more I'm not thinking of. But I don't think I'd worry about any of these the first time through.

Yes, that is what you need to do: (1) copy all contents of the mod to the Oblivion\Data folder, and (2) activate the mod from the Data Files menu on the Oblivion launcher screen. If you see the âOblivion.esmâ file then you are in the correct place.

Step (2) is unnecessary if you have installed Wrye Bash, as that application activates the correct mods for you.

Because this is your first playthrough, and you are only using official content, Wrye Bash probably is not needed. I would recommend not using Wrye Bash for now.

Two things here.

LOOT are not reommended to use for Oblivion while BOSS is.

Wrye Bash is definitely needed in order to use all unofficial patches as some UOP patches is either merged or imported into the bashed patch.

I agree not to use OBSE for the first playthrough, but RefScope is excellent for troubleshooting a mod issue in-game which requires OBSE.

Anothor mod that's recommended to use is Oblivion XP. Unfortuntely, the mod also requires OBSE.
