Solinarius
Here's the sleeker version. The proportions are much better now. If you haven't started modeling yet I'd suggest working off of this picture. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v244/Reclusezoii/DelorasFirefinished.jpg Length... Well I'm not very familiar with vanilla oblivion anymore. The realistic in-game length would be around 1.04, 1.06 is the "real" length of the vanilla steel longsword. The .02 difference gives the longsword about a 2 inch advantage.
LoginToDownload
The weapon-length as set in the CS is a multiplier for the mesh's length for purposes of hitting opponents. That is to say, if a sword had a length of 3, it would be able to hit things three sword-lengths away from the attacker.

Solinarius
The weapon-length as set in the CS is a multiplier for the mesh's length for purposes of hitting opponents. That is to say, if a sword had a length of 3, it would be able to hit things three sword-lengths away from the attacker. I always thought how that was applied in-game was odd. But I've tested it so many times, 1.06 seems to be the perfect number for the steel longsword. It was long tedious work but I tested the striking distance on all the weapons, making the reach longer if the weapon was centered in a unfeasible manner. And Istari, I highly recommend outlining your weapon and it's details on paper and scan it or take a picture. Drawing stuff in paint/photoshop is a little tedious, I am kind of used to it thought since I've been drawing stuff by mouse for a good while :). Some advice I can give is to draft your weapon on paper, the basic shape of it in your mind. Then slowly add the details, inch by inch (or mm by mm if you want it perfect). I forget who said it, but a great artist said "Every block of stone has a statue inside of it". Chip off the rough edges.
ihateregisteringeverywhere
A simple trick is to draw it with a pencil first, then use a black marker to "ink" the finished shape, erase the pencil, scan it, clean up in photoshop - voila.
