LHammonds
Or "back-rev" the plugin so it will work with any version of Oblivion. I prefer to use ESPluginCracker because it is just so dang easy. LHammonds
bben46
For those who don't know: The bben_test_dagger is a stripped down mod with no textures, meshes or anything else. It only consists of a single .esp file. it just adds a standard vanilla iron dagger in an easy to find place. It is intended for testing to see if your mods are loading right. It has been tested using Vanilla Oblivion, with and without patches, with and without SI, and with and without many mods. I should probably redo my test mod and put something into the prison cell so you don't have to go through the intro quest to find it. but I don't have the time right now. If he can't get this one to load he has a problem. I know some of this is repetitious, but many times there is some small step that was overlooked the first time through. First, Be sure you installed Oblivion in the default location. C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion Using the windows explorer, go to C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data Make sure there is a file there named bben_test_dagger.esp If it is .7z, it is NOT the .esp file but the zipped file and needs to be unzipped first. If it is there, start Oblivion, if you use the built in Oblivion Launcher that comes with the game, you will see a menu with Play, Data Files and more. Select 'Data Files' and not play. The bben_test_dagger should be listed. Along with any other .esp files that were in the \data folder when you looked. If it is not there, there is probably a problem with your installation. Either it is in the wrong place or somehow it is looking for the data folder in the wrong place.
Michlo
First, Be sure you installed Oblivion in the default location. C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion Using the windows explorer, go to C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\Data snip I'm curious as to why you are advising that people should install to the default directory. Most wise computer users these days would do anything but given that we keep separate disks / partitions so that we don't lose everything in the case of an OS crash. Also, if you're not smart enough to know how to then navigate to your game directories for mod installing.... you probably shouldn't be anyway. heh
bben46
MichoI advise people who don't know how to manipulate files and folders to use the default in XP, but not in Vista because that is where the game expects to be loaded and where it expects to find its files and the mods. My own Oblivion is actually located on my D: drive, with my swap file on my F: drive. C: is reserved for work. I do not give advice or instructions for putting things in other than default or recommended locations because, if they don't know exactly what they are doing, they will screw it up eventually. And then blame it on me.

I hear you but on the flip side, you may influence some into thinking that they HAVE to install it that way, which of course, they do not. :) A disclaimer might be in order, mate. heh And again, I must reiterate, if a person doesn't know how to navigate around their own computer, they might want to learn more about that before trying out mods which could then spoil their game for them. Just my opinion, of course. :whistling:

bben46
Somehow your bben_test_dagger is labeled as an .esm (master file) while it should be a .esp which is the mod file type..esm files are a special case of file used for storing modded objects that can be used by other mods (.esp files) The test dagger was not packed using this format.Did you rename it?When you extract it from the 7-zip it should extract as bben_test_dagger.esp Could it be that your system is extracting other .esp files as .esm files? I have only used the US English version to test this as that is the only version I have access to. Re: Micho. If they know enough to put their game in another location, then I should not have to tell them. If they don't know enough, well, a little knowledge can be dangerous.
