hoofhearted4
ok so as the title says, my laptop just completely shut down when i plugged in a VGA cable to hook it up to my TV. believe it or not this has happened before. a long time ago, when i first bought the cable like a year ago (but not necessarily when i first used it) i plugged it in to my laptop and it shut off. instantly. like i pulled out the battery or something. thinking my laptop completely died since i couldnt turn it back on (again like there was no bater or power what so ever) i set it aside and used an old laptop for the longest time. some time later (like months later) i randomly tried to turn it on just for poops and giggles and it turned back on. since then, ive used this VGA cable multiple times to hook my laptop up to my TV. just today, within the last hour, i hooked it up and it worked just fine. then like 10 minutes ago, i unhooked it and hooked it back up and poof, my laptop goes off. i have no clue what could cause my laptop to turn off and not be able to turn back on just from plugging in a VGA cable? i have no clue how long it will be before it wants to turn back on. could be 10 minutes, could be 10 days, could be never again, i have no clue. the laptop was not running hot. it was simply sitting on a desk (actually overhanging the desk so the fan was on open air and not on the desk (was more like a shelf then a desk haha)) and yea anyone have any idea the connection betwen a VGA cable and not only my laptop immediately shutting off but not being able to turn it back on after? it was always plugged in. i even swapped out the batter (i have two of these laptops, the first one actually broke on me...well my dog broke it but ya) and that did nothing. hope it comes back soon lol. i dont have the backup laptop anymore, since i gave it to my dad so id be computerless and thatd suck (on the family PC atm, which is slow as hell and frustrating to use lol, plus its hot in this room) thanks for your help guys. maybe i can shed some light on this bizzare problem. :wallbash:
Erik005
It looks a bit like the grounding problem that front-panel USB-ports sometimes have.
hoofhearted4
is there anyway i can fix it? or check to see if thats the problem?
Erik005
I have no idea, I've seen topics about PC's shutting down when the user puts in a flash-drive in their front usb and it looks a bit like that. I don't recall seeing a fix except not using the ports though. The port is probably connected to the motherboard, if that connection is bad it is bad news for the laptop and your wallet Edited June 20, 2012 by Erik005
hoofhearted4
yea. well like i said it randomly fixed itself last time. granted that was like 6 months later, but idk if it really took that long to fix itself lol. i keep trying tot urn it on periodically but to no avail. this seriously sucks if its dead for good. i couldnt afford another laptop if i wanted to. at the most maybe like a cheap $400 notebook or something. but then im screwed for games. :/ EDIT: took the back plate off my laptop. no real reason. didnt know what i was looking for. didnt find anything. there is a screw holding the mobo down next to where the VGA input is. i unscrewed it and screwed it back. put the back plate back on, not thinking i solved anything and boom, my laptop works again. not sure if taking the back plate off did anything, or perhaps taking and replacing that screw made it so whatever was potentially touching the mobo to ground it, wasnt touching it anymore, idk. i still wish i knew the absolute solution in case it happens again. idk if i can refrain from never using VGA input again, even though its caused this issue twice now (out of probably 20 uses) but yea. issue has been resolved..kinda. Sarissi
Sounds like a poor assembly job to me. If the problem does not occur again, it was a bad assembly on it; Time will tell on this. I HOPE you fixed the problem.
hoofhearted4
well have had the laptop for like 2 years now. and it gets constant use. i dont plug in my VGA often so it shouldnt be too much of an issue from here on out...and hopefully by next spring ill have a desktop anyways. but who knows lol, thats been a plan now for over a year. just cant get the funds for it.
