List of CTD Cuasing Mods

I agree with Georgie. The main cause of crashes is not mods per se, it's the game engine itself, the CK, and the entire mod framework. The focus of a thread about stability and CTDs should not be on individual mods. Having said that, there are cases where mods do contain dirty edits, and that is a problem. There are also cases where mods do have legitimate conflicts. ...

Although using mods could theoretically be fairly simple and reliable, it's not. Bethesda has not invested sufficient time and resources in producing a robust modding framework. For example, there is no reason to retain elements from uninstalled mods in the save games. At some point the community will most likely produce a utility to clean save games. There have been utilities for removing dirty edits and orphaned elements for previous TES games. I used Wrye Bash to do this for Oblivion. It's not working for Skyrim right now. I suspect there is some level of frustration among the modders with the poor state of the Creation Kit and the Skyrim game engine on the PC. I'm hoping that things will improve, but there is no guarantee.

After playing Skyrim for about 6 months on my PS3, I purchased the PC version through Steam primarily to play with the fantastic number of mods that are out there. Unfortunately, I allowed automatic updates to Skyrim from Steam (installed version 1.6 without my knowledge,) and I've installed and uninstalled many, many mods without giving thought to the impact they might have on my saved games or the structure of Skyrim overall. And, unfortunately, I did not make a backup of my configurations either through Steam (learned of this too late to prevent the 1.6 problems) or using a hard drive backup program (shame on me.)

So lesson learned the hard way, more discipline in the installation, configuration and backup of the game and the mods if and when I wipe everything out and start over. Too much frustration trying to troubleshoot the individual mods and their uninstalls, and too much invested in character building under those modes to try and re-create them without a clean restart.

5. Unofficial Skyrim Patch (Credit to MadWizard25 whom I saw a post on this one,)

Thanks... but i honestly dont remember telling anyone that the USKP was a source of CTDs? :P

In any case, thanks for the information on potential issues with some mods Zerosion. I dont think its bad at all to post about mods that may be causing you ctds. Its a filter for some of us as to what to troubleshoot next. In any case, 1.6 could have broken these mods for some people on some mod setups. Its entirely valid to point it out this way. The more info the better.

Eventual misinformation may be an issue, but its impossible to avoid on forums like these.

  • 5 months later...

All peoples delicate sensibilities aside, I sure the hell would have appreciated a list of mods that were known to be dirty or save corrupting BEFORE my game got jacked. I nearly smashed in my computer the day my Oblivion game got fubard. It was like no matter what I removed or how far back in saves I went it didn't matter, I still crashed. I think I had a few super super super old saves that seemed stable but it was a ton of game play gone, and I wasn't about to start the hell over, especially when I didn't know what had caused it. Oh I was so mad. Had a Bethesda Rep knocked on my door that day I'd be in jail for unlawful modding of ones foot up anothers ass.

"WAS THAT INSTALL CLEAN ENOUGH!!! What do you mean we have a conflict!? Nah were pals. You just need a little patch hehe. Here Let me install that for you. Ugh. Um, yeah, that skin doesn't look like it belongs on your body model. What version Rep did you say you were again? Well on the upside at least you didn't CTD. (Thunk) DOAH!"

I mean face it guys all slander fears and complexity issues aside, friends don't let friends drive corrupt saves into Oblivion!

If you see something, say something. Prompt bug reporting can save a life

(NOTICE)No Bethesda employee was actually harmed in the writing of this post. But this guy from NCSoft got jacked up!!!.
