Transfering Mods

Hi all,

I'm getting a new laptop soon, one capable of gaming.

Instead of wasting time trying to get all the mods installed that I already have installed and such, does anyone know how to correctly transfer the mods directly to the new system?

I'm hoping there's an easier way than just re-downloading from Nexus. I'd have to assume simply copying the Mod directory would not register them correctly within Vortex's database?

Thanks for any help in advance :)

P.S. I hope this has not already been resolved elsewhere, I did a cursory glance over the forum and Google, but nothing came to my attention.

When you say "the mods you have installed", are you saying "installed and managed with NMM"?

If so, Vortex does have an import functionality: https://wiki.nexusmods.com/index.php/Migrating_to_Vortex_from_another_Mod_Manager

That being said, we strongly recommend starting from scratch by reinstalling mods. If you still have the mod archives (zipped mods), you can save yourself the download step by dragging them into the Vortex dropzone in downloads/mods view.

The reason for that is that NMM is flawed when it comes to logging your mod installation, increasing the chance of unmanaged files in your data folder. Vortex cannot import unmanaged files, which may result in mods not working properly after importing.

Importing is only really recommended for mod lists consisting of simple mods, or when you are certain that your NMM installation is clean and your data folder free of unmanaged files, and if you have not tinkered with your data folder at all. We will be updating the text on the import tool in Vortex to reflect that.

This entry was advised by one of our most knowledgable users ( Grestorn ) :

For the first error message, there should also be a "Fix" button that fixes this problem automatically.

The second error message indicates that you chose a location for your mod installation path that's not on the same disk drive than the game.

Make sure that the Path defined in

Settings->Mods->Mod Staging Folder

is on the same disk as the game you're modding.

And a tip: If you have a complex modding config working with NMM, I would keep it. Moving to Vortex is not recommended unless you start a whole new modding installation from scratch. Moving a complex modding config is hard and should only be done if you're well versed in modding and how Vortex works.

>> I never imported any game from NMM so I cannot help you at all. I am using Vortex from the very first day it was out but I never tried the importing feature. Why ? Because I was playing with my Fallout 4 for a very long time and when you do that, you setup your load order, make some tweaks via Xedit, probably a merge patch, perhaps a Wrye Bash Patch as well, add some custom mods, etc, etc, and because the way load order is not being handled in the same way in Vortex, which allow you to resolve mod conflicts via rules ( that you do not have in NMM ), I decided NOT TO import my games but to delete them and delete NMM and restart fresh via Vortex.

The importing function in Vortex is nice to have but you have to know all aspects of it and as Grestorn said it, you have to be very well versed in modding to be successful. As he said, moving a complex modding config is not that easy. You may be able to transfer some mods but you would have to download others mods and re-do everything you did back in NMM .. probably, so the cost is overwhelming, time consuming and it could go south and you may ending up with more troubles than not.

That is why I personally do not recommend to do it and this is the major frustration every single newcomer have. Do it at your own risk. Sometimes is better to start fresh than breaking something to the point that anyway, you will probably will end up installing everything again from scratch, so what is the point ?

If you want to have a very smooth, simple and successful experience with Vortex, my recommendation is to start fresh. Do not forget to read in Vortex Feedback forum the questions and answers provided by our dev team. Good luck !

Sorry, I probably was not clear enough.

I already use Vortex as my mod manager. Fresh install. I recently purchased a new laptop, which will be here soon. I was looking for the best way to get the mods I already have installed without having to manually download everything again. It's time intensive task to sit here and re download ~50 mods and then install them again.

I did not know if there was a way to extract a list that Vortex would use to download them, or simply back up some files and then use them when setting up Vortex on my new machine...

I hope that makes more sense? Basically I'm looking for the easiest way to transfer my Vortex mods from this machine to a new machine in the next couple of days  Call me lazy, if you so desire

So to clarify: I'm not using NMM at all. I'm using Vortex on PC 1. I want to transfer IT and the MODS to PC 2.

Thanks for being more clear about what you are trying to do.

There is no shortcut to what you are trying to accomplish that we can recommend. I will actually have to go through the same in a short time. What you can do is grab all the downloaded archives from the Vortex download folder (Settings > Download), bring them over to the new device and drag them into Vortex there. That will at least skip the "having to redownload everything" step.

Hi BigBizkit ...

... this is off-topic but now I know that you are supervising the forums, I am just letting you know that since yesterday, whenever I post something, it does not show me it was posted ( as before that you could see immediately your post after clicking on the post tab ) till I get out of the thread and come back .... that is why I clicked the tab twice and my post was double. Is this a recent bug in Nexus that you are aware of ? Can you bring this to your team's attention please ?

Thanks so much,
