Gray Screen

Sometimes I get a grey screen. If I change my look angle it goes away, if I move it goes away. It seems to be when I face a certain direction, in a certain spot I get it. Though it is not permament, and doesn't seem to actually interfere with gameplay, it is only nuisance. But a big one. And it seems to be happening more often as of late.

I am using FCOM, plus a few more mods, and am bashing them together. If a list of my mods will help I will provide it, but I am only using beatiful people graphics.

Thanks for any help offered.

Edit - Oh, and since I am here lookinf for help anyway, every time I exit oblivion windows pops up with "ths program has stopped working" does not seem to actually affect anything so likely not a big deal, but is anoying. As this was happening long before the gray screen I am almost certain they are unrelated.

Grab the nVidia black screen mod. There are many threads on this.

I had searched, though for grey screens. Anyway I downloaded the fix and I still have the problem. It is loaded immediatly before my bash patch, second to last.

I also had selected the nvidia fix from within my bash maker. Niether are working to resolve it.

Anything else I can try?

Edit - After having done more research into this I learned that supposedly bloom lighting mode is not susceptable to this glitch, so I changed modes, and I still have it. I even tried the omega drivers that were recomended in another thread.

I'm out of ideas, would love to hear a few more.

Sorry, mate, that's all I've got for you. This fix doesn't always work for me either. It seems to in some places but not others (perhaps not in mod areas, I'm not sure).

I'm not sure if you noticed though but it only happens whilst sneaking so if it is safe for you not to you'll avoid it.

Cheers.

Your windows message is fairly common. It usually doesn't do anything to affect your game. The only way I have heard to get rid of it is to track down the specific combination of mods that cause it and get rid of them. That combination seems to vary from person to person. Most people decide it isn't worth it and let it go.

Huh. Well good to know I guess.

I noticed on alll the patches to fix that nvidia propblem are at least a year old. Does that mean the mod community figures it's fixed, or that there is nothing more that can be done? I have managed to reduce it alot by applying all the patches, both bash fixes and omega drivers, yet it still pops up from time to time. So aggravating.

There is a recent upgrade to one of the black screen patches here:

This doesn't sound like the traditional Nvidia Black Screen Bug though.

Are you using streamline? Sometimes it gives strange graphics. But I don't remember a grey screen that you can move out of.

  • 2 weeks later...

I was using streamline, but since found my game runs better without it. And I dislike the *streamline* stutter. didn't post becasue I thought the problem went away. And to an extant it has. For my main character. She only runs into it very rarely (like twice in the last fifty hours) and both time it was a very small look angle and place so not a big deal.

However my new character, Started with my current bash setup so SHOULD be more compatable, is encountering it everywhere. With a new brown variation. And when she encounters it (yes all my characters are female. Since the whole game is equipping and unequipping characters I don't like playing dressuop with men :P) it is far larger areas and pov.

It seems like it is set to a character, and somehow saved to them. When I go back to the same place with my first character it is never there, but no matter how many times I load my second charcter or how far away I travel, it is always there for her in exactly the same spot. Nvidia fog fix doesn't affect it, andas you noted it doesn't seem to be the standard problem, as I can always walk out of it and funtion within it normally. HDR, bloom or none also doesn't affect it. Converting a backup save to ess seems to help a bit, but that only adds to my confusion.

Sigh. Any ideas folks?

Bah, I'm sorry you're still having this problem.

I'm also sorry about the advice I have to give. It seems you are at the point where you'll need to give the game a try without any mods, make sure it isn't happening and then add your mods in slowly to see which one may be causing it. Make sure to use the FCOM tool for your load order as well, of course.

Oh and yes, the "stopped responding" when exiting is common when using mods and something I think most of us feel is a small price to pay for the added longevity to the game. :)

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Taking a bit of a break to play some neverwinter nights 2. But I seem to have reduced the problem. Using the backup saves changes where the grey spots are, and seems to make them a quite a bit smaller. Still haven't figured it changing to a backup save more than once will have cumulitive effects.

As for vanilla oblivion, don't sure. On this system I have never played it, BUT I did first get this glitching playing only fcom and it's essential files. Don't know if this will help anyone figure it out, but I noticed I can't get the grey screen when I'm in third person view.
