xSweet666x
When he says that in my game I just keep hitting him and he finally gets the dialogue right.
JANXOL
Confirmed. Don't listen to him and keep fighting. The quest will be completed when you hit him few times. (Four in my case)
xangreigor
And after you're done attacking him and he gives you the sword, he keeps chasing you until he kills you. I tried the "kill" command, but after falling and getting up, he will again continue attacking. I didn't have the problem before Dragonborn DLC. EDIT: Well, I've deleted Skyrim again. But this time it's not because I overplayed it, it's because of a bug. Vilkas. It completely kills the experience! I've tried a ton of "solutions". Nothing worked. So, did anyone figure out why this bug occurs? Is it because of the Dragonborn DLC and/or Dragonborn Unofficial Patch? JatinderXD
I had this bug and I found some info related to that bug. idk why but that companion starts acting like a city guard and start following you. Solution : Before trying this, try fast traveling to a location. If you can, try the second solution. If you can't than remove bounty from all of the holds. Follow these steps if you are new to this : 1. Go to menu (esc) and see stats > crime , At the very top you can see you bounty. For example Rifteen Bounty - 1000 , Whiterun Bounty - 40.2. Go to the hold with bounty and talk with any guard. He will say you are wanted man or something like that, pay - off your bounty ( Note that do not remove bounty by bribing, you have to pay that ) If you dont want to loose money you can open console (pressing ~ ) and type "player.additem f money" without commas and replace money with amount of money you want(cheating O.o )3. Check Stats again if there is any bounty left. Solution : The cause of this bug for me was Installing dragonborn without any patch :/ I installed dragonborn on version 1.0 and got this bug. What I did was I uninstalled dragonborn, hearthfire and dawnguard installed the latest patch and installed the again :)
Deleted6919211User
The shield bash works! You just have to do it repeatedly until he says "Not bad...". Then talk to Vilkas again. He should then give you his sword and all is well.

rtrick
Had the same problem today when i started a new game. How i got passed it was went back before the save when i had 1 bounty added for accedently stealing from a table. went back initiated the quest again. he started that no magic here stuff again. so i tryed duel wielding Battle Axes. took 3 hits and he finnished the mission. he would not budge with single weapon and shield for me. Hope this works for you as well.
vallaryn
(My first post, yay!! :D ).So, I ran into the very same bug today. I figured this quest is a matter of how many times you bash him, not how much life you draw from him (even why, no matter how much I hit him, his life metter is still as rock!)SOLUTION:Keep an eye on his life meter. It should appear on the top of the screen (near your compass meter) every time he finishes the annoying phrase. Hit him AT THIS PRECISE MOMENT. Four or five times (I lost count, meh...) should be enough. He will then put his sword back claiming you are "not bad". Stop hitting and talk to the man. Job done.As far as I could see, if you hit Vilkas while he is talking or after he puts the sword back, he will become unfriendly to you and hunt you down forever (as described by xangreigor a while ago)! No excuses accepted! Never interrupt a man's speach, eh?! :PHope this helps. Thank you guys! ;)
maxconely
I had the same bug, guys. But, have no fear! There is a solution! I think...I was so frustrated with this bug that I just started wailing on him, even while he complained about using magic. After about 10-15 seconds he'll say its over, and the quest will be over. I know, right! Anyhow, just try that and see if it helps you too. Fyi, I used a dagger, which attacks about 2-3 times per second. I would quicksave before attempting this, though. Cohaeven
I tried the console commands "Disable" and then "Enable" it reloaded vilkas but he just kept repeating himself. I finally got it to work by using the arrow technique. Stood back from him about 15 to 20 feet and kept shooting him with arrows as quick as possible (consider enabling the quick reloading perk for this using the console command for perks if you havn't already earned it) while slowing moving towards him. After 20 arrows he finally just stopped and i completed the quest. Ps. I did up a lot of skills in the process though by whacking the s#*! out of his dumb ass. :D Edited January 4, 2014 by Cohaeven
