I'm not as bright like I used to be so I'm hope someone can clear me some of my nogging. Fresh install and run the game once. Here I am, asking what should I do next before I start mod it until it break again, and which essential community mod should I pick up (eg; community bug fix, mod that improve how the game run, enchance graphic, thing that not tinkering with gameplay or mechanic). I do have and remember a few mods that I used back in the day so that shouldn't be a problem. I just don't want to miss any step before I start modding NV again.

Like you, I recently returned to the Mojave after playing the game and completing it even before the DLCs came out. Mods are really a matter of personal preference, but having said that, here are some of the main mods I'm using:

1. Yukichigai Unofficial Patch - No tweaks, no new content, nothing but bug fixes

2. Clarity - An Orange Tint Remover - the default game's orange/yellow tint on *everything* really bugged me the first time I played. After reinstalling all these years the tint is even uglier than ever, me having been spoiled by better graphics in games since then. This mod removes that tint, so colors are more natural now. It's still mostly browns and ochres (it is a desert after all) but at least the sky's a proper blue.

3. NMCs Texture Pack - the default textures are really ugly. I've been spoiled by The Witcher 3, I guess

4. Realistic Wasteland Lighting (with brighter nights patch)

I tried getting Fallout Character Overhaul, but I just couldn't get it to work.

Yes, it is. It's linked in the "Performance" section of the wiki "Fallout NV Mod Conflict Troubleshooting" guide in a couple of places, including the new "Issue: TTW Performance Guide abstract" (which is generally applicable to FNV and FNC as well). Just want to point out it says nothing that contradicts this "Troubleshooting" guide, which expands on some points with more options than the video.
