Domhnall
I've dabbled in the CS, the BG Infinity program, and the NWN Toolset. (The last is the most user-friendly for the inexperienced.) I'm curious what programming languages are commonly used, and how one goes from knowing virtually nothing about it to being able to either create their own game, or modding another game without total reliance on the modding tool furnished by the game producer. What language(s) does MW depend on, and how do you learn it (them)? Anyone have any good learning links? As a side question, why do you guys think these companies (Bethesda, Bioware, etc.) are motivated to release modding software with their games. I know that in years past, people were still "breaking in" and making mods on games, but the game release had no such software. Why is it in their financial interest to release these? Sarrowa
Well to first say, this is in the wrong forum, this has nothing to do with MEMod. For when this gets moved, Morrowind uses its own language in sorts the way I learned to script is I took a half finished mod and compared it to a finished one and then didn't look at it and made it work myself. Another program could possibly use the same way of scripting Morrowind does, but I doubt it. And for your side question, one of the more obvious answers to that is that it keeps the game alive. Imagine Morrowind with no mods what so ever, it would be terrible! With all these mods being released it gives them more time to make a new game or just sit around. Plus it could increase profits for them. But remember that next time you post, always watch what forum you are posting in and read the rules. -Sarrowa :nazgul:
Peregrine
Why is it in their financial interest to release these? 1) Potential mod authors are more motivated to buy the game so they can get the ability to mod it. 2) It keeps the community around. A stable community for a game = more profits on the next in the series/related products/etc. And who says we don't rely on the released modding tools? Moving to plugins since this isn't really MEMod related.
piojitoewok
also about WHY they would do something like that 1) As many people have noted, theres alot of minor things wrong with the game (wrong names show up, MEDIUM ARMOR MASTER TRAINER, simultaneous scripts conflicting) They arent going to release a patch just to fix one or two things, instead if someone is determined enough (as many have) they can go in and fix the issue and release it. 2) Modders/Scripters are some DAMNED clever people, they devised ways to do so much, from Fishing Ships and Flying Carpets to Dual Weilding (still iffy but whatever)

Smite_Plight
download the manual "Morrowind scripting for dummies 5" It will walk you through scripting pretty well. There are other tutorials for dialog that are better if you are mostly concerned with that.
