SKSE Blues

I love all the cool mods that people are making. It has really made Skyrim a better game! I wish that I could even begin to understand the Creation Kit so that I could make mods too.

Another thing I can't understand is how to use SKSE or the Skyrim Script Extender. I went to the website for it (thanks to those modders who put links to it on their mod download pages!) and downloaded it. When I read the 'readme' file for it I was baffled. Install this type of file in these folders but those types of files in different folders? I hate to break it to the guys who made SKSE, but this is more than the average person can understand.

Thank goodness for the Mod Manager! Otherwise, all the mods would probably be as big of a pain in the ### as SKSE is to install. I tried to figure it out, but kept having problems with SKSE. I finally gave up and deleted all the SKSE files. I guess I'll have to stick to the non-SKSE using mods.

If I may, I'd like to plead with modders : "Please do not use SKSE in you mods unless it is absolutely necessary to get the game to do what you want. Some of us can't understand how to install SKSE and we're missing out on your cool mods".

I'd also like to ask the makers of SKSE to come up with an easier way to install the program. Remember guys, not everyone is as clever as you are. We are not all computer programmers. Heck, I know plenty of gamers who understand even less than I do about how computers work.

Thanks.

Well, if you decide you want to try SKSE again this video might be helpful:

I'm not trying to ignore your plea, btw, but the opposite is probably what is going to happen. As we go along more and more mods will require the script extender. It's really worth figuring it out so you can take advantage of some of the features it enables. SkyUI alone makes SKSE worth figuring out.

Uhm, if you use the Nexus Mod Manager then the installation for SKSE is;

  1. Open the archive and drop all files into "\steamapps\common\skyrim\".
  2. Start Nexus mod manager which will auto detect SKSE and launch that as default.

I'd say that anyone could do it.

Mhm.

For now I make a point of not using SKSE functions since it doesn't add much functionality... for what I do. There are plenty of mods that do really require it (some of the things left out of Papyrus natively are just random) and as SKSE gets more robust, I will eventually start using functions from it, I know.

... I give no sympathy for your issue. There are tutorials on how to set up skse... which is a simple process, on youtube. There is almost always an answer online if you dont understand something you just need to take the initiative. Not saying you didnt trying to read the readme, but sometimes video tutorials work best.

I found out that the latest SKSE bugs out NPC Editor. It's because of those strange *.pex files.

Why are they needed? They wern't in previous SKSE versions.

For one thing, the papyrus support in the new skse (i.e. the answer to your question) allows awesome (though not as popular as I thought it would be) mods like this to be available without having to rely on script dragon (which I avoid).

To the OP, I was a bit intimidated the first time I used script extender (for FO3) but, trust me, you'll eventually get comfortable with it. It's worth it to get comfortable with it too, since you have to update SKSE everytime a new Skyrim patch is released. Either go to a video tutorial or simply follow the readme explicitly. I.E. yes, install this type of file here, and that type of file there - follow it to the letter and you're golden. I gotta say I agree with all of Korodic's comments on this one - you just have to take the initiative.

As per the SKSE readme, the casual user doesn't even need all the files in the download but, as pointed out by JSX3, just droppin' the whole shootin' match into your game folder will work too - the files you don't need aren't going to hurt anything.

Personally, I manually copy the dll's and the exe into the game folder as per the readme but, for the script files (since they go into "data" like 99.9% of other mods) I archive them into a 7zip file and upload and install them via NMM. That way, if I ever need to uninstall SKSE, I can just deactivate that upload via NMM and "voila" the scripts are gone. I don't anticipate having to uninstall SKSE except to upgrade when the inevitable next patch comes along, and even then I'm sure you could just install the new version via copy/replace. It's just a quirk I have that I completely uninstall the old SKSE before installing a new one.
