Deleted235831User Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 I have a CTD in a very specific area around Darkshade. Incidentally, this problem doesn't affect my other saves games just my main one with 250 hours sunk in to it. I eliminated most everything I could find as the cause (removed mods, clean saved, validated game files, checked drivers, etc) and I am not getting any CTD's anywhere else. Took me a while but by changing settings I slowly got closer and closer to the area with the problem. I think it is the waterfall above Darkshade. If I get too close from any direction it is instant CTD. Now once I could get close enough I noticed the watefall looked 'odd': So I used the freeflying camera to get a closer look and something is clearly amiss. Partially trapped at low resolution perhaps? Now you can see the mesh/texture/animation is a bit screwed up. I think if I get any closer it triggers a change (higher resolution texture or different animation maybe) that causes the CTD. Disabling/removing any and all mods does nothing to stop the crash or change the appearance of the blocky waterfall. My best guess is a mod (probably since removed) has broken something on this save. I've been back though a few saves and not found any that isn't affected by the problem but I have yet to check my backups. Below is another screenshot from an unaffected save from the same PC and Skyrim install with the waterfall as expected. Any ideas on how to fix this? Also any suggestions what caused it?
tetradite Posted July 2, 2012 Posted July 2, 2012 Hmmmm, have you ever installed my Fleetford mod? It alters around Darkshade and the waterfall looks very much like that in my game too, (but I have not AFAIK actually amended the waterfall and I don't have CTD issues there). I was pretty sure that it looked that way when I was pure vanilla, would like to rule out my mod as the problem (or fix it if it is) :D

I might try installing it to see if it inadvertently helps. Also looks like a pretty cool new village. I've actually had problems with weird graphics issues with this save before. I used to have a bit of mountain terrain that floated in the sky somewhere to the west of Wilhelm but I removed a mod (I don't recall which one) and it went away. I'll try and see if I can get some debug/log info on this issue tonight. [EDITED TO ADD] Further investigation leads me to suspect that this is a something nice left over from the "Realistic Water Textures and Terrain" mod. I now understand this mod is somewhat infamous for causing waterfall related problems when installed and when removed. Also it was probably the cause of the floating terrain (which is apparently a misplaced waterfall not part of a mountain) I mentioned earlier. My plan is to reinstall it and try a couple of things to get it remove more "cleanly". Anyone with experience of "Realistic Water Textures and Terrain" offer any advice? Edited July 3, 2012 by Guest
Deleted235831User Posted July 3, 2012 Author Posted July 3, 2012 Couldn't track down the issue so I gave up and went to an earlier save. Lost about 20 hours of gaming. Nothing heavy mostly just exploring and crafting. Ah well.
tetradite Posted July 6, 2012 Posted July 6, 2012 I've had a look into this. I can't speak for the CTD's but as for the waterfall appearance.... it's an LoD thing: That left hand waterfall piece just happens to be right smack bang on the edge of a cell, if you approach it from the west side (the side you took the pictures from, by the big river bend, you only get the LoD view of the left hand side because that piece is JUST (and I mean JUST) outside the number of grids that are loaded. If you approach it from the east and then turn back around (or approach from the west, get closer to it, then go back to where you took your pic from, the actual piece rather than the LoD piece will be displayed, because then it's been loaded. Hope that makes sense. Basically the appearance issue is unconnected to the CTD issue as far as I can tell.
Rovanus Posted May 1, 2016 Posted May 1, 2016 Ok, I know this is resurrecting an extremely old topic, but I am having the exact same issue!I come in from Valtheim Towers toward Darkshade, get near the top of the waterfall and BAM - CTD.I've tried removing all mods that might have affected it, since I'd travelled that road before (and admittedly there were some spots that gave me trouble with jerking and crashing). Is it just the Bermuda Triangle of Skyrim?
