Skyrim Expansion Talk

This is not a Mod Request. This is an invitation.

What I would like to see is an expansion to Skyrim itself. Perhaps not as innovative or as well-funded as Dawnguard, of course, but something much more ambitious than a one-shot mod.

I ask the question: What would happen if the Nexus' best world builders, quest designers, writers, voice actors, and innovators came together on a single project, comparable in scope to Dawnguard, or the Shivering Isles? What would we build?

I have only a few basic thoughts on this, to start the discussion:

* Preservation of Skyrim Worldspace. For some reason I don't care for the idea of having giant buildings protruding where the majestic mountains of Skyrim once stood. Think Dayspring Canyon / Forgotten Vale if you've seen it on XBox.

* Intertravel system within main expansion area. Of course, this implies something big enough to need it.

If you're feeling interested in this idea, or just want to tell me that I'm a crazy jackass trying to bite off more than I can possibly chew, let me hear it.

If there were a large group of the Nexus' best, who put their full effort into the project, I bet you would be able to get something as big or bigger than those two expansions you listed.

I would definitely be interested in a large scale project, especially if many well-known nexus modders joined. However, you would gather more people and build more confidence if you tell us a little more about yourself, who I assume would be the project leader? Do you have the time to dedicate to handling the team? Do you have any experience in being a project leader? Do you have any plans on how to organize and do quality control on such a large project?

Again, I am very interested. I'm a level designer myself, but I have some experience and skill in team management, creative writing, and general planning/concept work/ideas/etc. But you'll need to try to grab the attention of the bigger modders, try to put together a nice proposal for the OP or something like that.

I'll check on this thread and post again tomorrow, right now I am extremely tired (and possibly loopy on sleeping meds).

I have run a project like this before, but we weren't modding a game, we were trying to design one. I created an group called Labyrinth Designs and recruited musicians, artists, and writers for the purpose of putting together an RPG. I was too young, I was flying blind, and after a few months, we had a little music, some storylines, and some concept art, but nowhere to go, and the project was disbanded.

As far as time, I don't really have much of a life. In the next few months I'm going to have a _lot_ of time on my hands, and to be honest, I've been wanting to run a project like this for far too long.

Let's talk, you and I. I think we'll come up with some damn good ideas. Hell, you sound like me, except I'm not a level designer.

And after what I've seen from the modding community, which is crap I've never seen anywhere: purely invented monsters, giant castles, on-the-fly inventory control, voice actors (VOICE ACTORS!) I don't see why this isn't done already.

Hai there. There are actually several mods well in development that attempt to create something big like that. I don't know of everyone, but those that I do would be Falskaar, Tytanis and MERP, last of which is recreating Middleearth and Tolkien's world bringing it to Skyrim. Each of these mods adds a big land outside of Skyrim but also, afaik, will work as an explansion, meaning it will allow the transition from the new land to Skyrim and the other way around. I may be wrong though.

But you have said one very important thing, that should answer a lot of your own "questions" :)

Quoting: "I was actually talking about creating a new project, not joining another (not that I can honestly blame you for trying) However, you put up a good model of what we need to keep an eye out for. "

The most known and active modders around here aren't likely to join someone else's new project, they will start their own/or, in most cases, have done so already. Or they will find a project that is already established and a secure 'investition'. By no means do I want to discourage you from creating your expansion. Quite the contrary. But I'd advice taking the matters into your own hands and not wait for a team before you start working. Build a foundation, possibly with the other mate who wrote in this topic, and in the meantime fish for more people. But the more you have done and the clearer your concept will be, the bigger the chances will be that someone will take a liking to your ideas and jump aboard :)

Yeah, I had basically the same idea, I didn't want to jump too far into development without just opening a topic of discussion first. But you're right, until something gets a good foundation, it'd be very hard to convince anybody to join up. That's mostly what I wanted to do here, talk about a foundation.

As a MERP representative, I'd like to point out that our Middle Earth probably won't be in any way connected to the Skyrim landmass (even via debug teleport commands). Because of the already huge size that our v0.1 release (Rohan, which will be about the size of Skyrim itself) is planned to be on its own, we will likely end up deleting the Skyrim world for filesize purposes. When we call ourselves a total conversion mod of Skyrim, we mean it
