Sick of Random CTDs. What the hell is wrong with my game!

Son of a freaking pile of dog-shiz.

Damn game randomly CTD'd in the middle of speaking with Karliah about the agent of stealth moments before I would have left and autosaved. Now I need to redo that entire fking mission because of a random CTD.

There is absolutely no damn relation or similar situation between them. The fking game just decides to s*** itself at its leisure!

Now I get to listen to Nocturnal's monologue thinking she knows me. I just want to return the damn key then go kill shiz as a Dark Brotherhood sister, your reward be damned Nocturnal! I don't give a twiddley doo about it.

Well, I do not quite agree with you Coltsr2. I've been digging through these threads for a little while now, and while I absolutely appreciate that so many people here are willing to help, a lot of them (including me, I guess) give advices as it comes to their minds and not necessarily out of an extensive experience of the various issues we're dealing with.

Also, it takes quite a lot of time to follow these various threads, and once the community looses interest - or someone launches a new thread on an old subject because he did not take the time to read older topics, valuable info get lost deep in the forum - and it only encourages people to create new topids that have been dealt with a 100 times before!.. It's endless.

So, yes, I do appreciate that bben46 created a blog, which I visited, that lists in a logical order these many issues for us to check out. Plus the fact that he is a moderator, and has been for so long a member of Nexus gives me a pretty good idea that his tips are worth being trusted. Some threads had the same purpose in mind in the forum, but again, they got lost deep under "how can I get rid of Lydia's hunting bow?" types of topics, or questions that are already answered in their mods description pages if they had done a bit of reading, often started by people who are new to the game or the Nexus. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they mean well, but they inadvertedly participate to cluttering the Forum. A blog that nobody can clutter seems to me like a logical complement to the incredibly vast amount of info circulating in the Forum.

Many, many solutions to nearly every one of our issues is already on the Nexus - but the counterpart of this richness is you really need to dig deep (and that takes time) to find what your are looking for.

Can't please everyone... But actually, yes you can. And one of the ways to do it is to create alternate solutions like bben46 did. And I'm very grateful to him for the time he must have put into this.

Sorry for the "strange" English, man, not my native language. Cheers to all from Paris :)

No one is trying to take away from the good intentions of other members here...all am saying is why not keep it here..open a new thread....he sure knows his stuff and am grateful for his dedicated and logical input ...maybe open a new thread or section here would be a better option as most members wont see his post or know about his blog...maybe even sticky his advice and way of condensing all the info we have to help others, his blog is excellent...but wh ynot post all this here in a new thread, ....anyway thanks to all members here trying to help...it is not my intention to upset anyone and anyone who contributes their time and help is worthy of a thanks...so thanks and forgive me if i came across the wrong way.....

The reason for the blog format is because I am tired of answering the same questions over and over from people who don't take the time to read all of the hundreds of posts on the same problems I have already made. By putting these into a blog format, I can just give a link to the blog - which has the most common solutions to the most common questions.

The alternative is to search through the last 8 months of posts to find the same information. :wallbash:

Is it perfect? No, Is it better than nothing? Probably. Is it worth doing? I will leave that up to the hundreds of people who have given me kudos for helping them. 8)

BTW, Gaming is supposed to be fun. When it stops being fun, find something else to do. I have quit several games because I did not enjoy them.

Well, have you patched everything up? Verified the caches? Updated Drivers? Tried bug fix patches by community? Tried to tweak your videoboard's drivers configurations? Third party programs to use up to 4GB of RAM? Even sound drivers? Do you have any mods? Your computer specs, did you post them before?

@ Coltsr2:

Nothing to forgive!.. Again, we're all trying to help, or seek advices here - and most of times, both in the same time. Or else, we'd be playing instead of lingering here... ;)

I, for one, enjoy very much having joined a community who loves the same games I do. Only should have joined earlier!.. And yes, I thought about it too, spreading bben46's link in the related threads on the Forum is probably a good idea. Would you agree to that, bben?

@Cipherthe3vil:

Haven't done this quest yet on PC. But I remember on PS3 (where no mod could interfere), all Karliah related quests were extremely buggy. I never crashed but sometimes the game went freezing and I had to reboot - which still meant the game could not process it correctly. Other unrelated quests apparently interfere with the Karliah quests. Have you checked on the Wiki, or uesp.net. if they don't already list your type of situation? Sorry I can't offer better support than than...

@ Kazevura:

For my part, yes, I did all that. Plus I monitor my RAM usage and GPU temperature, constantly verify that my data files are clean... Another thing I'm trying, which takes a bit of time, is to clear up my quest log... Haven't tried using Wryebash though as unfortunately my fairly poor knowledge about game tempering makes me a little shy of it... I'm fairly at ease with my computer, but not quite so much with game or modding issues. Also, my game is a French version and all my mods are English ones, I suppose in some instances, it may cause problems.

One thing I noticed though is that my problems started roughly at the same time I downloaded CK and opened it to try and understand how this all work - only to shut it after a couple of hours, thinking "Uh oh, don't want to mess with that!.." (I was very careful not to change anything of course).

If anyone can bear with me a little longer, my main problems are:

1 - I CTD trying to enter some caves or mines I already cleared - and that coincided with me trying shadow fixing mods or fog remover ones (was trying to gain some fps). Though removing those mods helped a while, the CTDs came back in the very same places - plus new ones. I used NMM to disable these mods plus manually checked that all related files were removed from my data, but that did not seem to help. It is quite possible also that my CTDs were not related to those mods (as I can enter caves I have not cleared without a glitch most of the time) but mere coincidence.

2 - quite a few cells now no longer load properly - and that's the most bothering issue for me at the moment. :( Vlindrel Hall is one, and I love the house a lot - but the enchanting room is lost in limbo, if I enter it, I fall out of the game. The Ragged Flagon Cistern is another. Most furniture is gone, stuff floats in the air, etc. And at times, this happens randomly in other places: Solitude's Winking Skeever or other shops, some random inns on the road, or some ruins... Geirmund's Hall was the worse. Console command pcb worked in Geirmund's Hall but does not seem to have any effect anywhere else - not the "restoreinterior" command (unless I'm doing them wrong: I enter the cell, type the command, exist and re-enter, is that it?).

Anyway, that's where I thought clearing my quest log could maybe help a bit.

3 - last issue is with Proudspire's mannequins, they keep respawning forever until their inventory is so full that I CTD whenever I try to enter through the basement door. Luckily, the 2 other main floor doors work fine so far. Vanilla Mannequins Script Fix works perfectly anywhere else and the mod author is very helpful but these 2 mannequins are giving me a hell of a time, nothing I've tried works so far.. I wish there was way I could simply delete them, but my understanding is if you use console command "markfordelete", the items are not deleted from the game but simply made invisible. Is that correct?

And no, I haven't posted my computer specs but here they are: i7 CPU 64bits, 4 dual cores + 4 virtual dual cores, 2.80 gHz, 6 Go RAM, nVidia GeForce GT 230 with 1.5 Go VRAM (kind of low but faring pretty well so far if I keep my settings between high and medium), sound settings on 16 kits and 44.100 gHz. And other than the fog remover and shadow fix mentioned above, I never dared to use any graphic mod at all, that might terminate my poor GPU!.. ;)

Sorry for the long post, but if any of you guys has advice to offer, especially to help restore cells that fail to load, I'd be immensely grateful...

Cheers to all from Paris

Cheers for the reply..after a re-think i can now see why you have done a blog....my apologies for sounding a bit arrogant....thanks for all the info and the way you have wrote everything it certainly makes a lot of sense....if am honest i prob have too much time on my hands in the eves to browse these forums but i agree the answers to questions can often be a bit ambiguous and scattered about.....thanks again and please ignore my original post on the subject.....am glad to see you are posting links to your blog on many of the threads here to save answering every question over and over......thanks gain and keep up the good work!

Please feel free to spread the link anywhere you think it is needed. And please let me know if there is any incorrect information so I can correct it. I'm also open to any suggestions on how to make it better or what else to include. It's best to contact me through the PM here at the nexus.

This tend to happen whenever you have more than one abode mod installed, i've seen this several times before, lots of missing meshes making you fall through the floor and to the twisting nether.. and i have always fixed it by deleting abode mods. I know it sucks, but the game doesnt like a lot of housing mods installed at the same time. Try to disable/delete your housing mods and try to make a clean save/new game and see if it persists. Helgen is a great place to check if you wanna look after missing meshes, and if you're lucky, that might solve the whole CTD thing. Hope it works out for ya!

EDIT: This can also happen if you have a single abode mode installed. Pro tip(you're probably doing this anyway:p but you never know): Read the comment section both on nexus and on workshop to see if anyone have the same problem with the abode mod.

@ Sonickon:

Thanks for the tip, Sonickon. "Only" have 3 mod houses left, all of them were carefully updated by their creators after patch 1.6, and all of them have worked fine for a pretty loooong time. I always read threads and descriptions very carefully before I pick a mod and seen noone reporting anything worse than some minor fps losses for these. Will double-check.

I even disabled two of them at some point to migrate from their Workshop versions to the Nexus ones (ahem... yeah... ;0)) - and I seem to remember it made no difference at all in my game. But then, it's farily easy with Nexus to check if anything "strange" lingers in your data files, it's far less obvious with Steam...

But you're right, I should try again. Pretty unpleasant move though, for my character, since I do not rely anymore on any of my Vanilla houses to be safe... Damn dragon bones are heavier than anvils!..

And Helgen, ok, been a long while since I haven't set foot over there...

CTDs sort of slowed down this week-end though (or maybe I just did not venture to the glitchy parts of my game) and waiting 31 days helped restore the Ragged Flagon (but not Vlindrel Hall, argh!..)

Thanks again, I appreciate your sharing your experience! Cheers

Same problem here, CTD when I enter different cells, some of them works if I fast travel. I have tried to reinstalled the game several times updated drivers and so on. First I had like 300 hours played in the game when the CTD started, that´s why I think it has something to do with the patches. I read in some forum people thinks it´s connected with the size of the saves, but I´ve started severals new games and it crashes as soon as I get close to whiterun-county. So I can´t get my shouts even started. Of course my games now has a lot of mods, but even when I didn´t, i crashed anyways. Every mod I got has what it is suppose to need to work.

I have a Intel i7, win 7, 8 gb RAM, SSD-disc and a radeon gt 440.

Oops My bad, the reason for my CTD seams to by that my UFO didn´t was set to start last!!! It finelly works =)
