Unable to install mods

I've got Fallout today and want to add highly useful mod, such as LooksMenu for a starter. As expected, I cannot find it in the list that's directly on the game so I have to go through Nexus - even installed the Nexus Mod Manager for that. Thing is, it doesn't work. Even when I Downloaded the mod, even if it shows in NMM, and click "install", it never show up in my game. What am I doing wrong ? What is the best way to download mods from Nexus and be ensured it works ? Can someone enlighten me please ? I would be very happy. :D (Happy New Year !)

LooksMenu requires the script extender, F4SE. Be sure to download and install it.

Also, do the following:

How to enable modding

  1. Navigate to your Fallout 4 Folder at the following location "Documents\My Games\Fallout4"
  2. Within this folder you'll find a number of .ini files.
  3. Open (or create, if missing) Fallout4Custom.ini with your favourite text editor (we use Notepad++).
  4. Add the following lines to your Fallout4Custom.ini
    [Archive]
    bInvalidateOlderFiles=1
    sResourceDataDirsFinal=
  5. Save and close Fallout4Custom.ini

That's it, you're ready to get modding!

A "readme.txt" should be included in the F4SE download, it'll tell you exactly what to place and where, but for your convenience I will copy + paste the directions:

[ Installation ]
1. Copy f4se_1_10_120, f4se_loader.exe, and f4se_steam_loader.dll to your Fallout installation folder. This is usually C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Fallout 4\, but if you have installed to a custom Steam library then you will need to find this folder yourself. Copy the Data folder over as well.
2. Launch the game by running the copy of f4se_loader.exe that you placed in the Fallout installation folder.
Take careful note of Step 2 as it is important. You may want to create a shortcut for f4se_loader.exe and put it on your desktop for convenience, as you'll have to launch the game using it.
(to make a shortcut, right click f4se_loader.exe, and in the pop-up menu click "create shortcut")
P.S. - It is also sometimes a good idea to ensure that f4se_loader.exe is set to launch with administrator priveleges. To do this, right click on it and select "Properties". A screen should pop-up with numerous tabs, but the "Compatibility" tab is where you want to go. Once there, make sure that the box that says "Run this program as an administrator" is checked. Then press apply, and then OK.

Get ready for a world of frustration, tubers don't ever tell you the hours spent making sure all the mods you downloaded play nice with each other. However don't fret, you just need do some research and follow steps for installation correctly (don't skip steps because they are complicated). You may also look into the Wyrebash (or similar) programs, here's a tutorial - grumbolos (sorry spelling is bad) has good one but I can't spell his/her username lol. Also going into steam and turning off automatic updates will help you in the future when the game updates but F4SE has not yet.

Lots of great advice in the forums if you use the search function. Everyone on here probably learned how to mod their games from the forum, at least I lurked here for 3 years before I really got into modding.

Oh wow. I never imagined it was that complicated. It did seems easy when I saw MxR presenting all those mods.. o_O

I used to play on Xbox, and got all my mods off of Bethesda.net (that 'in game menu' you mentioned). That was easy - they are 'dumbed down' versions meant to play nice together on consoles. Once you come here you've reached a whole 'nother tier of power-gaming.

Since Sept. I have been playing on PC, and been using Nexus. First off, I feel your pain. it is daunting - I was there. But its not really as hard as it seems so long as you are able to follow directions, and the F4SE 'mod' is necessary for a lot of others to function properly. You'll find there is 3-4 other 'must haves' that other mods rely heavily on (like AWKCR), but once you have have all that loaded and ready to go, the rest will become MUCH easier.

It does become easier as you go forward... until you break your game. Completely. More than once, too. Expect that. I've found modding isn't so much as a way of making your games better, but rather, it starts to become the game. You'll want to see how much you can get away with. How much you can throw at your system before it goes on strike. Also, its fun to see how certain mods interact with each other. Sometimes you get unexpectedly excellent results from combinations, and other times you'll find your quests have all become bugged (be wary of having more than one mod adjust the same world space - you can, you just have to tip-toe around the quests - sometimes loading a mod after you've finished a certain quest just to get past that point).

There's also a cap on how many you can run at once - around 250 or so (although there are plenty of work-arounds for that as well, like using esl's instead of esp's, or merging mods). You'll see. Welcome to the addiction.

EDIT: I see you mentioned getting the game after seeing MxR's videos. I know he has started reviewing Lover's Lab mods - do yourself a BIG favor and stay away from there until you become used to modding. If you think Nexus modding is hard, you haven't seen nuthin' yet. That the 'dark web' version of this place. LOL

Ohhh man, I think as a girl, there's no interest in Lover's Lab mods. I highly prefer mods that are useful (adding new, balanced weapons), or features that I'd find useful. I've always liked non-human races in Fallout. Ghouls, or Synths.
