Progression by community

For the past couple of months I've created and run through a number of characters and right around the level 25-30 mark I have kind of stalled out because the build I went with in terms of perk cards just became a grind. It turned out to make some content harder than it should be, or I just haven't been able to figure out the gear just right or quite possibly it's just me. So I thought I'd turn to the community for some of their best practices or experiences to see if I can improve my own play/experience.

What follows for those that don't want to read is some context for how I play and what I've experienced to provide insight to any feedback you share. Thanks in advance for any responses/guidance.

I play solo, duo, and occasionally in a full team of four. I don't go after the exploit/grind things for xp or caps so my rate of progression and access to stuff is generally guided by how I'm doing on main and side quests, and the occasional event.

In terms of combat I've found that for weapons (up to the level where I feel stuck) the best to use is hunting rifle followed by melee, and then pistol. Rifle (.308) lets me one shot a lot of things at range but then when it comes to close combat switch over to the machete or fire axe tends to work best. Pistol (even with a pistol build in terms of AGI and PER perks) has felt like a giant ammo sink and the damage output except for the revolver that you get as a quest reward (legendary .45) has been disappointing. I've recently gotten into combat rifles that also shoot .45 rounds but, for a rifle they seem sub-par compared to the hunting rifle or the revolver so it feels like a pretty hole in terms of equipment progression. Maybe my perspective is skewed by the legendary items I've gotten but I would think that a level 20 or 30 weapon should perform better than a level 5 legendary. My experience to point has not proven that to be true.

I don't know that I've ever given armor a fair shake as it seems like I'm always over burdened and so as soon as I find a power armor frame I'm generally in that and gear that up with raider then T-45, and T-51 bits as I go. Maybe that's just life if I don't go for a melee/heavy weapons build but that just feels super limiting not to mention that I've found a number of cool outfits that I never seen except for when I step out of my armor to craft.

You need a role. Linda B. Wells was a 76er (LOL, that's what they are) She was killed. There wasn't a way to get supplies or weapons after leaving Vault Seventy Six. 2km away from the Vault the scorched got her. No supplies, and hardly any weapons at all. She died like that, while you progress & progress. Yeah, I know where a N99 pistol is. But she didn't know that. Because it's a role. This one was lacking some serious sustainability. You know, one would have to figure what it was like living in Vault Seventy Six or prior to the great war so that we the player could understand who that was.

I must have ran through 12 characters that ended up getting killed in 76, and then I deleted them afterwards. Why? Permadeath, that's why. If you are going to have realistic expectations, well then, it certainly doesn't hurt to understand what the reality is. I played FO4 for 3 years just wandering around. I never played the progression game because I didn't have to. It was more of a random wandering play of the "Independent" faction. Then that turned into Vault-Tec for the faction, so there. Nice reach out to the Enclave for logistics. Then sneak over to the Brotherhood of Steel. Took 1 year to become fun.

Keep your eye on the prize. You know in a year or so, we'll remove everything you have grown accustomed to in Seventy Six the arcade version of the wasteland. Then it will either be empty place where everything is rare, or there will be even more stuff if only you could survive going there long enough to make your way back to the only safe spot you could find. LOL, though the general idea of the wasteland is that it is incredibly difficult to find anything, there are some that go beyond that. So there is this border of sanity that was pushed in creativity. Now it's both, and with something new to go with it.

I too have had a number of characters killed and with no chance of defending themselves. For a game that blocks mods from being added to the game it is certainly on the bottom of my list. It has so much potential but Bethesda saw fit to keep mods out of the game and it will probably spell the death of this game long before it should have died.

Sad. It has so much potential.

Well look no further than the progression player. Progression will burn up the players in less than a year. So what then? The studio has no other choice than to provide content for the progression players. Meanwhile, the players that don't fit into the more popular play styles are all going to wash out. Will they come back? Will others come to try 76?

I went back to FO3. I ran around in Vault 101 role-playing a young child/kid/teen. I went to megaton to test the game. Started some killing sprees with a few mods that add in wastelanders everywhere. I played with Arwen Realism Tweeks. I compared the rigid controls in Seventy Six to FO3. Then Dumped mods on it until it was nearing 20Gb.

Before that I was playing Seventy Six. I quit that game twice. The first time was when I felt like I had got my moneys worth. Though this was only about 60 to 70 hours. At that time 76 ruined all games for me pretty much. I went back to playing 76 a few weeks later. Then there was a month were it was just nothing but bad news with 76.

I thought I could roll with it. Even with creating mods for FO4 near the launch there was a month when I just had to take a vacation from the game. I didn't play it all that much, but things were just so negative. Sometimes I get that feeling, and I just bail. People get a bad feeling from 76. That is a failed game right there, feels bad.

Instead of being able to roll with it, I jumped ship. Maybe it's just a damn jinxed game. There's some kind of gypsy curse, VooDoo, Black Magic, Something about a Fallout game has continued to murder it's players. We're sorting it out. Finishing what we want to finish before leaving Fallout, never to return. Gone to play other games.

It certainly does introduce some unique play styles though. Seventy Six being what it is. In the old days when something like this happened we just kept playing, and made it fun for one another. There are wars though. When I quit 76 the last time, it was trolls. Level 50's running around Vault 76 hitting players that were just trying to play the game.

Then there was rampant cheating. I found a paper bag that had 60,000 aluminum, and two other crafting materials in a huge amount. Right in the middle of that last permadeath run, a player gave me 1000 ammo for 10mm & a pistol that was higher than my level. I was only playing permadeath because it was what I found that made 76 fun at the lower levels.

It's been a struggle man. There's this just awful feeling inside. You know, like the thinly draped veil that was covering up all the smoke BGS/BS/Zenimax has been blowing up my arse, and all the mirrors, magic, and greedy little fat men licking their fingers. What's left? Nothing but salvage. In fact I believe it feels precisely what it would feel like to be inside the wasteland.

Oh, yeah, I'll play Seventy Six again. Though I won't let the game tug at me to push me into new areas that I didn't want to travel towards! Naw, Naw Man. It will be a slow play just to enjoy whatever there is that is there in my favorite place in the game which is hidden. You know. Hiding out in Seventy Six. But really slow played, and steady. :teehee:

Try Harder,
