Cuba

What do you all view towards Cuba? Should the U.S. drop the embargo, let people im/emigrate there? Should the tourism enterprise be brought back?

My own views are mixed. I think the embargo is ruining Cuba, and that if Cuba would be left pretty much alone, it should be lifted but that probably wont happen.

All the Cuban-Americans will more than likely come back to Cuba (with a few American Soliders with them) and take back their ocean-side estates from the disabled, poor families, and working people living in them.

The culture Cuba is famous for will probably go bye-bye with the return of tourists. Not to mention, the mob will want to reclaim their lost empire of booze, whores, and cheap Vegas like performances.

And what happens if Castro dies before the Embargo is lifted? His nephew (a not so popular general) takes over. There may be riots spread across the country, and everything that happens above would be skipped over from the media, while they were watching American Soliders 'liberating' Cuba.

What do you all think should happen?

AFAIK Cuba has quite a flourishing tourist trade with the rest of the world already. The girl who works across from me went there with her partner last year and had a very good time. She says (I have just asked) it is very well geared up for tourists. Whatever happens, American soldiers should keep out.

The U.S. has no business in cuba, imo. Not in any country...

I have to agree. Live and let live. That we should remain in an active state of aggression with a sovereign country only 90 miles off our coast is the height of lunacy. That Cuba represents a threat, real or otherwise, is about as realistic as former CIA agent Sadam Hussein producing real evidence of the imagined WMDs. All we are doing to Cuba with this embargo is making the residents of Cuba suffer. This is a silly and unnecessary enterprise.

Ha ha, great pic :D

That said, it annoys me that every time we get a game or piece of hardware made in the US we are reminded we may not export it to Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libia, North Korea and Syria (and another I cannot remember). Forbidden to export GAMES and COMPUTER HARDWARE? What's next? A warning on games that playing it may lead to the desire to posses nuclear weapons?

*hides his nuclear arsenal in his wardrobe*

Yeah that's a great joke. Hahahahaha.

*looks round nervously*

:P

Anyway - Cuba. My own view is that the US should certainly lift the embargo, as it seems to hurt ordinary Cubans more than anything else, and that's not who the US perceives as their enemy, even if remaining in a state of aggression with a country so close for such a long period of time actually made sense, which it doesn't.

I agree with Vandorssen: leave it alone.

Note: I can't get my screen-capture to work, so I just did this real quick in PS.

The Simpsons' rendition of the Government's plans for Cuba is OBVIOUSLY correct:

Why are we having an embaro in cuba anyway? does it have anything to do with elian gonzalez? Do we still think the missle crisis is on? do we enjoy being hated that much that we refuse to deal with any country?

Oh, a little off topic, but there is a mexican made cigar that is a rip off of cubin cigars...due to international cpyrite laws, they are now out of business. Accept no substitutions (unless you live in america and your dumba**ed govt holds a grudge...then get "Cuban" cigars anyway you want)!

Orrr....you can just ignore the embargo and smuggle Cigars in...

Honestly, it's easy as hell. The toughest part is gettin them out of Mexico, though, those custom officers will literally open your suitcase and take everything out. At one point I endured a five minute conversation with a large female custom officer, oddly enough it was over the contents of my water bottle...which contained water

Here's the conversation, as far as I can recall:

Cust.Off.: Que es? *indicating water bottle*

Me: errr...water...

Cust.Off.: *sniffs water bottle, pauses and then more sternly* Que es?

Me: *muttering* poo! *Loudly* WATER!

Cust.Off.: *Something rapidly in Spanish, then* que es?

Me: for the love of...WATER!...AGUA!...NO HABLO ESPANOL!...AGUA! for Christ's sake!

Cust.Off.: *something in Spanish, then pushes me towards the tunnel for the plane*

In the US, nothing was as eagle eye or invasive as Mexico. Surprisngly, this was after Sept. 11th. Says a lot about Airport security in the States...
