Enchanted Bow (or Arrow)

I would like to know which is better to enchant: a bow or arrows? Is it even possible to enchant a group of arrows? I tried enchanting a bow but I couldn’t tell if it was working (if the effect was working on the target) … other than the fact that the bow itself changed the way it looked after it was enchanted. I used a “fire bite” spell to enchant the bow. I also found some enchanted arrows and those clearly have an effect as they explode on the target, regardless if the bow is enchanted or not.

I’m envisioning someday enchanting a very powerful bow (or arrows?) that will let me do some serious damage from a distance. Won’t be for a while though, I’m only 9th lev. <_<

You can't enchant arrows, but you have an official Bethesda mod that adds a couple of new enchanted arrows. However, I think there is a mod somewhere on this site that lets you make your own arrows and enchant them.

Placing a cast on strike spell effect on the bow will never activate because you don't strike with the bow. You may place a cast on use effect on the bow but then it will effectively be like casting a spell before you start shootig with the bow rather than something that happens when you're shooting it. One enchantment I often use on a bow is soul trapping on target for some duration of time. I will use the bow to cast the spell and then hopefully kill the creature with shooting to capture it's soul. Other cast on use spells that can work well are ones that will make the target easier to his. Paralysis or damaging speed or agility can be used for this effect.

The basic game does not allow the player to place enchantments on arrows in the game, although there are one or mods that I believe add this but I haven't used any of them. It is possible to enchant thrown missile weapons, e.g. throwing stars or daggers, but not arrows or crossbow bolts.

The bows themselves do not take any significant enchantments IIRC. You are probably better off looking for one of the unique bows, there are three or four of them in the game. Otherwise browse the forum and find out how to get yourself a Daedric Bow at level one.

you CAN enchant arrows but they dont stack so unless you wanna take 4 hours enchanting your 600 arrows and have your entire inventory filled with them and having to go to the inventory after each shot to put a new one in, i dont think its worth it

You CANNOT enchant arrows, because every single arrow has a value of 0.

Therefore, it is impossible to enchant arrows at all.

Yesterday I managed to enchant some daedric arrows. What are you all talking about? I might have modded it, but I was playing on a specific game that has NO MODS and NO CHEATING on it. (The only cheat I used was to get bonebiter, because for some reason the ghost didn't have it - there was only ecto).

I believe it had 3 enchantment value.

I am not a enchanter ... but is it possible to put a constant effect on a bow for like 20 points of extra agillity or something?

Possible if you had a strong enough bow. Most bows except Daedric have low Enchant points, mostly suitable for only the most basic of CWU enchantments. You might be able to wangle in a few CE Fortify Attribute points, but certainly not 20.
