CTD when enabling any mod

Hi !

I'm starting a fresh install of Skyrim after several years not playing and modding it, so I'm going with the Special Edition acquired from Steam.

My intention is only to setup the bare minimum : Requiem and its requirements, USLEEP and SkyUI, get it to work, then follow the whole STEP guide associated.

I'm having trouble with an exit of Skyrim before the logo appears, when there is ONE mod (USLEEP or SkyUI) that is enabled.

I enabled Papyrus logging to detect what could be the failure, but no logs are being generated (it seems to stop before that).

I insist that Skyrim does not crash but exits silently to desktop.

Let me describe the process I followed :

1) Downloaded Skyrim Special Edition from Steam in a specific directory : C:\Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition

2) Zipped the whole installation folder to get it clean without having to go through a complete download if needed

3) Ran the game a first time to set up the ini files then exit the game

4) Downloaded Mod Organizer 2 and set it up

5) Installed SKSE Special Edition version (exe and dll files directly in the real folder) and the scripts in the Data folder with MO (as recommended in STEP if I am not mistaken)

6) Ran SKSE through MO and tried 'skse' in the console : it confirmed that the setup of SKSE was OK

7) Modified through MO the SkyrimPrefs.ini to add bEnableFileSelection=1 to the Launcher section

8 ) Downloaded USLEEP from Skyrim Special Edition Nexus with Download with mod manager and installed it

9) Enabled the esp and ran the game through MO : Loading 2 or 3 seconds then exits back to MO!

My analysis is that SKSE is not responsible here, but the enabling of mods (any mod).

I also tried to run the game without any mod enabled, enable it from the Mods menu : I get the message that Skyrim will reload, then it exits cleanly as in step 9 described above.

Here is a GIF demonstrating the issue :

It feels like I'm missing something obvious during the installation, but I can't find it, so I'm calling for help from the community here.

I can provide additional information if required about the issue.

Thanks for your time and your help!

Your GIF shows that you are clearly quitting the game. Try clicking "New" and see if the game starts up.

Yes I'm exiting the game because it is starting OK when there are no mods enabled, it runs fine and I can start a new game without any problem.

It's the second part of the GIF (after exiting the game the game) that is the problem: After enabling the mod and launching Skyrim in the same way, it does not start as it did when there were no mod enabled.

That is not so clear to see. Perhaps if it were a full screen video...

Just make sure that you have installed USSEP for your SSE game instead of USLEEP. It is hard to tell as the GIF shows up so small, but I think it says "Unofficial Skyrim Legendary Patch" which would be the wrong one to use for SSE. Perhaps the issue is due to that?

I indeed downloaded the wrong version of the unofficial patch (and did the same mistake for SkyUI..)

Thank you for your quick answer and your help!
