Help with right config

Guys, I need some experienced help. I have a regular PC (Quad Core Q8200 @2,33ghz, 4GB DDR 2 800Mhz RAM, Win 7 ultimate 64bits and a Geforce 8400gs 512mb 64bits overclocked) and I wish to know from you the best way to set things to make my game flows smooth. I know my video sucks, but it's the one I have and I intend to throw it away, but not now. So, does someone knows how to set things? is there any mod which could really help me to improve the performance of my game, without losing quality?

thanks in advance.

Well, I'm no specialist but I manage to play with a GPU only a little better than yours, but 6Gb RAM tho' and 1.5 Gb VRAM. 500 Mb is probably a little tight...

Try lowering your settings, especially "details", "blur" and "light". If Steam launcher sets it on high for you, don't rely too much on this, set it lower, try different settings until it feels fairly comfortable. Use the launching box for this, but you can also adjust a couple more stuff in-game. Keep V-Synch off, and probably anti-alias and anisotropic filter too or very low (2 or 4). Also lower your sound settings - 16bits and 44.100 gHz is ok (CD quality, I think).

And you probably figured that already, but stay away from graphic mods...

Here are 2 links that may help:

Don't do everything it says on the tutorial at once - do them one by one and check how it goes before you try something else, especially before installing any mod, including SkyUI.

Also be sure to disable all background apps that are not necessary. And monitor your GPU's temperature - chances are it might overheat abit.

But in any case, I doubt that with your machine, you'll get more than 18-20 fps. The game is still playable with that, it may stutter sometimes but not in every places - be patient with it... ;)
