Skyrim SE just not as stable as Oldrim

Sorry to necro an old thread but thought I would post this in case you are still having trouble and also for people making similar searches about load order and other issues like oldrim vs. skyrim special edition as well as sex mod and sexlab issues (notice me keywording stuff there for google searchers).

 

I have been modding skyrim for a long time as well. I use NMM not MO, and I don't use loot. Even without those I have no crashing issues. I have found SSE to be a LOT more stable than LE.

 

One of the big things I do which I'm sure you probably also do is make sure my mods are clean and fully converted for SE using creation kit, havok and se converter, sse nif optimizer, wrye bash, and SSEEdit. A lot of times older mods that are "converted over" per claims by mod author or someone acting with their permission are NOT properly ported over so their are faulty animations or meshes, or orphans, or not form 44, etc.

 

For new modders: MUST USE SKSE (SKSE64) Skyrim Script Extender

** Make sure your version of the game per steam updates matches your version of SKSE.

*** Turn off auto-update in steam so it doesn't break your skse, pick a runtime and skse version that works for your mods (usually animation or FNIS related) and stick with that

****PM me if needing help rolling back sse version to your skse version and TURN OFF auto-update on steam

 

As I said, I have had a lot more stability with SSE. That said, I have never used any sex mods on sse. When I DID use them on LE, this is what happened: I had never used sex mods and had a stable game (for oldrim anyway), I tried out sex mods and noticed an immediate emergence of instability, I uninstalled all sex mods, manually rooted out all of their scripts, animations, etc, and started a new game and all the problems I had with them were gone. Main thing was getting rid of those scripts. I can't even imagine how problematic genuinely converting those over from LE to SSE would be. You would need to be a legit programmer to do it without it causing major in-game issues.

 

Yaddy yaddy all that said I noticed that you and I have substantially different load orders. I don't get any CTD's and I use all the physics, face, lip, eye, body, companion, etc mods I can find (that I like or haven't tried), I have quite a few armor and weapon mods, and every retexture mod I can find that actually looks good). I try to avoid mods that add scripts at all costs and am often reluctant to add mods that add animations.

 

Check your load order vs. mine. I posted my LO from wrye bash and also exported from NMM in case they are different at all. Bear in mind that I have a LOT of retexture mods that are not plugins so not in the list. I am currently running 171 plugins and 294 active mods altogether. I have a lot more modded files that I manually did so they don't show up in my active mods count (294) at all. Maybe try mine out. By the way, when I can change textures without using the mod manager for the mod I do and manually download the mod instead and then cut and paste files (usually .dds textures) into the appropriate folders to overwrite, for example, I use a cbbe body, xpmsse skeleton, and body slide, but my textures are Demoniacs 8k body textures which I downloaded manually then dropped the files into my textures/actors/character/female file (hence why I said I actually have more than 294 mods.

My load order logic for my esp's:

- textures

- game changers/fixers and texture modifiers that significantly change the game like a new map, mannequins with cbbe bodies, and my load screens

- interface (skyui)

- locations

- cheats, new spells, other types of modifications that make me or the world faster, smarter, strong, etc

- NPC mods starting with game changing such as multi-marriage and AFT, then better follower type stuff, custom follower mods, then mods that change existing NPCs in some way

- weapons

- armor (the more it changes the game the earlier in the LO it goes

- body mods like cbbe, hair, eyes, etc

- race menu and enhanced character edit (yes I know using both of them makes a mess of things but this is my personal preference)

- Joy of Perspective

- FNIS

- FNIS add-ons like spells, sexy moves, kill moves, and THEN body physics

- Dual Sheath

- skeleton (xpmsse)

- Alternate Start

- mods that MUST be placed at bottom per mod author

- bashed patch (ALWAYS LAST)

For those just starting out, by bashed patch I mean downloading Wrye Bash and then running your mods through it. PM me for questions regarding wrye bash. Once you have done it, leave the bash patch at the bottom of the load order (last in order). ANY TIME you download a mod, rebuild your wrye bash patch.

game settings:

resolution: 3840x2160

all ultra, farthest LOD, medium god rays/flares, and medium shadows

 

FPS: On average around 50-60. If it starts to get laggy at all I completely exit out of the game and restart and the problem has always gone away.
